Left on A22 via East Hoathly to take left fork into lane just before Halland cross roads (3.217miles). Through lane and left onto B2192 via Shortgate and the Broyle to Half Mile Lane, Ringmer. Left into lane, left at end of lane onto B2124 (6.751 miles) via Laughton to finish 2 yards past power cables over road just past entrance to Farm on right and approximately 400 yards before Whitesmith Lane.

Start on A.26 one mile south of Tonbridge, at kerb point 50 yards north of Mabeldon and 10 feet past 40 mph limit signs (TQ580445). Proceed north and take first left to join A21. Proceed on A.21, left on slip road to Weald roundabout using the left hand side of the carriageway. (5.4 miles). Encircle and retrace on A.21 to finish at the leading edge of the last bridge before the A.26 slip road (TQ575451).

Start at 1st drain cover from west end, within confines of layby on A127, this being the first layby towards London from Gardiners Lane, Basildon.
Proceed towards London to first turn (7.5 miles) at the B186 Warley Flyover.
Left up slip road, turn right at T junction over bridge. Then left on slip road to rejoin A127. Continue on A127 towards Southend to junction with A130 where left on slip road then left into A130. Follow A130 to roundabout at the junction with A129 where circle roundabout and retrace (20.45miles). Pass under the A127 and rejoin A127 by means of slip road. Follow A127 to Nevendon where left on slip road to A132, East Mayne.
Left at first roundabout into Courtaulds Road to Finish at a point opposite the eastern end of the railings to bridge, 100 yards east of Archers Fields.

Start at the end of the bridge leading from the flyover at the London end of the Witham bypass. Proceed west to join the A12 and shortly take the slip road to Hatfield Peverel and again shortly sharp right to cross the A12 and rejoin the A12 in the eastward direction.
Proceed via the A12 to slip road to A604. take slip road to left and turn at elevated roundabout and rejoin A12 by means of the slip road. Follow A12 in the London direction to the start of the Witham bypass where left on slip road towards Witham (B1389).
Cross the bridge over A12 and then turn into Freebourne Road (24.3miles) to finish a lamppost 30 at the far end of Freebourne Road in the Industrial Estate by paint mark on the kerb 25F facing the centre of the entrance to Wheaton Road.

Continue through Ham Street and Kingsnorth to outskirts of Ashford turning left into road signposted 'Shadoxhurst 3 Woodchurch 6'. Turn at school sign 100 yards pas entrance to Stanhope School (approximately 13 miles 128 yards). Retrace through ham Street to Brenzett where turn left at Fleur de Lis (approximately 23 miles 208 yards). Proceed along B2089/A259 past start to New Romney and continue on A259 to Hythe (approximately 36miles 658 yards) turning left and then right to end of island where turn right into one way street for return (distance round island 1240 yards). Retrace on A259 through Dymchurch and New Romney to Finish at 'Brenzett" sign on A259 - same place as start.

Turning left off the A2 on slip toad A2018. Proceed around the roundabout (extreme caution) to take the third exit to finish at a point 15 yards short of the last drain hole cover before the MOT Junction sign to Dartford Heath North. Riders should then continue along the A2018 and take the first turning on the left before dismounting.

Start on eastern edge of T junction, 400 yards east of Mill Farm cross roads, Bethersden. Proceed over cross roads, past Pluckley Station to Chambes Green. Left to B2077 where left to Maltman's Hill. Forke left to Romden Castle, where right to Haffenden Quarter. Turn left here to join the A28 at Bethersden Bull. Left and remain on A28 to finish 500 yards past the Pluckley turning at footpath stile.

Start on A20 83 yards short of TP48 which is Ashford side of Smeeth cross roads. Proceed through Sellinge and Newingreen to roundabout at junction with B2068. Turn and retrace outward route to finish opposite TP32, which is short of Smeeth cross roads.
The time trial season is now well on its way and some of the events may seem a long way back. It is not my intention to go over the programme week by week as many accounts naturally duplicate in other notes.
The KCA 50 was held in blustery and showery weather. Roy Manser won in 2-6-6. Bob French got going very well and should have been somewhere near this time. He unfortuately punctured and sufferred a delay of 9 minutes finishing in 2-18-58. Martin Chambers recorded 2-18-29.
Seven members entered the ESCA 25 held in June. Martin Chambers was best and recorded 1-4-29. He was eight fastest. One of our regular supporters in the all round sense, Brian Kent from London, did a personal best tricycle ride of 1-9-39.
Jack Southerden was amongst members who turned out to ride in the Sussex Senior road race championships. Unfortunately non managed to finish the event. An excellent photo of Jack in uncharachteristic style appeared in the local paper by way of compensation. On the same week end Maurice Carpenter partnered by John Mansell (Worhting Excelsior) rode the tandem trike in the Colchester Tandem 30. Their time was 1-12-36.
It was a wonderful morning for the club Open 50. Hazy with a soft breeze. 95 entries were received from a wide area, establishing this event as a popular fixture in the South.
With all racing members on the start sheet, and many on holiday, marshalling was far from easy. Dennis Neeves found the stregth and stamina for the push off. I should like to mention that in addition to a mountain of other work, Fred Martin, our President motored 300 miles to make the event possible. Guy Little has requested that green sponges be barred in future. From remarks afterwards it appears that everything went well for the competitiors. All six ladies faced the starter. They were not so lucky as the wind increased later on, but they plugged unfalingly. Bob French was in good form and triumphed in 2-3-23. R Gardiner (Folkestone) and J Clements (Letchworth Velo) were second and third respectively. Pam Wells won the ladies in 2-24-47 with Jean Baker (San Fairy Ann) and Iris Stevens (Eastbourne) second and third. Brian Kent (Mephisto) won the trike secion. Veteran Ted Coussens turned up and road in his usual steady style. As he rode to the event it was quite a tidy mileage for the morning.
After the event the sky clouded and the wind increased. The left over marshalls were robbed of the much anticpated kip on Little Stone Beach. Instead we had a chilly and fitful snooze on some forlorn grass verge. Tea at Stone was enjoyed before the weary ending to a succesful day.
Our Presidets’ birthday run was belssed with the usual fne weather as on previous occasions. Whether the dates come from Old Moore’s Almanack or not they are always right. As befitting the title this was a leisurly run. Elevenses were at Chitcombe. Just past Robertsbridge we bumped into a crowd of some 50 ramblers. Lunch was al fresco at Burwash. As the pub was near the recreation ground we were able to take our drinks over and watch the local cricket match. When they adjourned for lunch the midday break was rounded of by a snooze in the hot sunshine. Tea was originally arranged for the “Abbey Hotel” Battle, but they could not take us on this occasion. “The Star” bang opposite was fortunatley able to take us at a moments notice. It was a fine tea and not since pre war have I seen so much on the table. Although we had several young people at the tea, some was left over. Many thanks, Fred from all for an excellent day. In Battle ramblers were as thick as flies. Just like the 1930’s. Life goes on.
The evening 10’s have been well supported. Rye with Jim Holland at the head have provided fine support throughout. Bob French has done some 23m. odd at times. The juniors who turn up everytime must be mentioned. Peter Miles has proved fastest so far.
The experimental photographic evening last year proved a success. By popular request another evening on a bigger scale is planned for this year. It will be held at the “Abbey Hotel”, Battle on the 25th October commencing 4-30 p.m. Tickets including buffett tea 5/6. Those who would like to compete are invited to submit not more than 4 half plate prints mounted on card with a one inch border. Anyone may also submit 4 colour slides of 35 mm size only. A film show will round of the evening.

The end of the summer' mixed fortune being enjoyed, or rather endured, by our racing team, although from a series of D. N.S.'s, D.N.F’s, fallings off and blowing up, a few bright spots shine out. The E.S.C.A. ' 50 ' provided a few surprises for us - Maurice managed 4th place, 3rd handicap and 1st vet., Martin did a very praiseworthy 2.23.32, Tim finished with a credit able 2.29.40 and Terry did 2.31.21. In the E.S.C.A. '25' Tim deservedly won the 1st handicap with a two minute improvement to 1.8.29, with Stephen, our only other finisher, recording 1.11.15. The following week, Tim was 2nd fastest Juvenile in the K.C.A. ' 25 ' on Romney Marsh.
On the last Sunday in October, twelve people set off on our 50 in 4 trial. At the end of the madcap dash to Ringmer and back, only one person failed to report to the timekeeper within the allotted time. He was a member of 'another club', and succumbed to the siren lure of home as he rode through Sidley. Dave and Audrey even had time to partake of a. mini-banquet which they produced from their saddlebag and ate in a bus shelter. Robin Peters made one of his rare appearances, and rode round in fine style. This was David Kitching’s (" no relation" he laments), introduction to our way of club life; he and his wife Jennifer have joined us from the Hillingdon C.C., and we are very pleased to welcome them.
At our A.G.M. in mid - November, there was little change in the hierarchy. A few minutes aberration were sufficient to see Esther elected President for 1978. Martin has taken over from Dave Morris as Runs Captain, and Ron Longley and David have been added to the committee. We decided to introduce a new category of membership -· it was agreed that O.A.P' s. should pay the same reduced membership subscription as the juniors. So far, the expected hordes of senior citizens, brandishing their pension books and demanding membership have not materialised, but when word gets round, who knows what may happen!
At the moment we are all on tenterhooks for Ted Coussens, who only needs to ride just over 1,000 miles to achieve his ambition of reaching his 400,000 mile target. All being well, he should make it by spring of next year. We have seen little of John Lawrence throughout the summer, although he assures us he has been getting in the miles in the New Forest area. A long way to go for secret training rides, we thought, until he confided that he had relatives down there in the licensed victuallers trade, and they supplied the digs.
The Carpenters gave their recently acquired tandem an airing on the afternoon of the E.S.C.A. tourist trial. After one or two rather wobbly permutations had been tried, it was decided that Maurice and Esther should ride the machine to Hellingly, closely escorted by Tim and Stephen. They agreed that their journey was well worthwhile, as they demolished their share of the splendid tea provided by the Southboro' Ladies, although they felt rather shamefaced when they saw all the people who had been brave enough to start in the event in the morning.
Guy Little who celebrated his 70th birthday this year, is looking forward to next season, when he hopes to complete a hundred mile ride. Provided he can get through the winter, and given the right sort of conditions, he is confident he will succeed. Whilst tidying out his garden shed, Ernie Spray came across an article which he was able to identify as a bicycle, and he has promised that he will be in attendance on some of the more leisurely clubruns! This seems to be an ideal opportunity to thank the 'Rovers' for the hospitality they extended to us on a recent Monday evening. We are not quite in the same class as them at ping-pong, though Richard and Joanne did their best for us. We held our own at the more sedate games, and it was generally agreed to be a very jolly way of spending an evening.
As I seemed to have filled my quota of space, it remains only to wish you all a Happy Christmas and New Year. As ever,

Mr Frederick March, one of the most ardent and successful cyclist Sussex has known, has died in hospital at Hastings, aged 77.
“Freddie” as he was known to generations of racing cyclists and to the thousands who knew his familiar figure on the lanes of Southern England, won his first “event at “ Tunbridge Wells in 1908.. (remaining text missing)
Mr Frederick March, the well known Kent and Sussex veteran cyclist of 62 Mount Pleasant Road, having, died on Thursday last week. He was aged 77.
Mr March was a former active member of the Kent and Sussex Fellowship. He was a clock maker by trade.
Old cycling friends and representatives of the Hastings and St.Leonards and other cycling clubs, timekeepers and other cycling interests were among those attending the funeral at the Borough Cemetery on Wednesday.
The Rev C Champneys Burnham officiated. The mourners were Mr H March, Miss E March, Miss C March, Mr P Bliss, Mr T Harrison (representing Kent and Sussex Cylcing Fellowship), members of Hastings British Legion branch and many other friends.
The coffin was covered with the Union Jack in token of Mr March’s service in the First World War and his membership of the British Legion.
The family express their sincere thanks for kind sympathy and beautiful flowers received: also their grateful thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of St Helen’s Hospital.

Hastings and St. Leonards Cycling Club's main run on Sunday was led by May (vice-captain) who chose a route through Brede. Crlpps Corner Northiam and Sandhurst to reach Hawkhurst. After lunch there the run went to Burwash and Heathfleld.

Well-known cyclist, and president of the Hastings and St Leonards Cycling and Athletic Club. Mr Perry Bliss, Mount Pleasant-road received leg injury when was involved collision with lorry at Hawkhurst on Friday last week
He was taken to the Royal East Sussex Hospital and detained and yesterday it was stated that his condition was satisfactory.
In the accident, which occurred the Talbot-road junction on the Hawkhurst- Hastings road at Moor Hill, the lorry driver, Mr B Spice, of Station-road. Hawkhurst. was uninjured.
A good 50 miles ride 2hr. 11mln. 47sec. by B. Kemp, the Hastings and St. Leonards Cycling and Athletic Club, gave him second place in the E.S.C.A. trial on Sunday. Another member, M. Carpenter, took first handicap place with improved ride of 2hr. 17min. 45sec. J. Southerden lost half minute the start and returned 2hr. 19min. 27sec. J. Adams, of Lewes, was surprise winner in 2hr. 10min. 51sec. The club run was Mayfield and Frant, with tea at Hawkhurst.
Tomorrow’s run leaves the King’s Head, Ore, 6 a.m. Tea is Hothfield, near Ashford.
Three members the Hastings and St. Leonards Cycling and Athletic Club set off in the wet and windy conditions on Sunday to ride for 12 hours over Kent roads in a K.C.A. and club trial. B. Kemp retired after covering about 100 miles; R, Downey was soon in trouble with his change gear, but carried on, using only one of the four, to cover about 216 miles; and J. Southerden, delayed twice with punctures, ran out time after about 217 miles.
Tomorrow’s run leaves the King’s Head, Ore, at 6 a.m. Tea at Hawkhurst.
CYCLISTS from over South-East England rode Into the town last Saturday the guests of the Hastings and St. Leonards Cycling and Athletic Club, at their annual dinner at the Regent Hotel. Now entering its 75th year of operation, the club is one of the oldest cycling clubs In the country.
The visitors were from Tunbridge Wells,. Catford. Rye, the Medway Towns. Uckfield, Eastbourne. Bexhill and Welwyn. Welwyn Wheelers had the longest ride to the event 90 miles.
Guests of honour were Ken Joy, Medway Wheelers Cycling Club, British Best All-Rounder Competition winner in 1949, and holder of the R.R A. London to Brighton and back record, which he took last year: his clubmate. Peter Beardsmore, third in the B.B A.R competition, 1949, and winner in 1948: B W. Best, well known cycling journalist, timekeeper and administrator: A.E.C Harrison Medway Road Club and Tricycle Association, noted cycling official Roy Humphrey, Eastbourne Rovers Cycling and Athletic Club great enthusiast and worker for the sport in Sussex; and Councillor E A Tester. vice-president of the club and an old member and official.
Proposing the toast of the club Mr F.L. March who joined it in 1900 paid tribute to the president Mr Percy Bliss who was in hospital. With all his afflictions he was “the man with always a smile on his face”
Mr March recalled the history of the club. Its successes in county championships and the triumph of Mr George Jenkins; who is still a member, when he twice won the Bath Road Memorial 50, competed for by the selected 12 best road cyclists of the year, and represented the country abroad.
Mr J.H.Southerden proposing the toast of the guests said that the club was fortunate in having present so many prominent persons in the world of sport.
Responding, Mr Joy said that in the past the club had had great men in its ranks who had ridden with success under its name, and he mentioned Mr. George Jenkins. “ We should like to see more of your men In the big open events today.” said Mr. Joy. “but to do that you need more competitive events in this area. You have the talent and you have the experienced men to encourage you.”
Mr Harrison said that the Hastings C. and A.C. typified the spirit of the sport to which they all belonged. He wished the club every and appealed for more club men from East Sussex to join the Fellowship of Kent and Sussex Cyclists.
Mr. Best said that It was a great thing to have attained so many years of continuous life as a club, and he suggested that a yearly reunion of the club and the one or two others who were as old would become a great occasion in cycling history.
Paying tribute to Mr Jenkins, Mr Best said that the cyclists were now looking to Hastings to produce another like him.
Mr A. Freeman spoke on behalf of the athletes among the gathering.
Mr K. D. Rome, proposing the toast of the president, wished him a speedy and complete recovery. He was, said Mr Rome, one of the stalwarts of club life, and his assistance had been appreciated by many young members starting racing.
Councillor Tester, who responded for the President, said that it was an honour for the club to have so many distinguished visitors. Cycling was a great sport, and it was one of the few left today where members were not spoon-fed. In road racing especially everything had to be done by the competitors themselves, and that was true sport.
The prizes were presented by Ken Joy. Winner of the club best all rounder competition was J.H. Southerden (for the third time in succession), who has now made the Blackman Trophy his own. Second in the competition was R.F.Powell.

Peter Baker broke the Hastings - Eastbourne - Hastings record for a bicycle on 21 July 1983. The record had been held for thirty years by Gordon King.
At the Tunbridge Wells A.C.C.’s track meeting last week Terry Baldwin of the Hastings and St. Leonards Cycling and Athletic Club, rode well in good company and won two of the three open events — the 440 yards and 880 yards handicaps. In the 1970s a Youth week was held where boys and girls went to Crystal Palace and spent a week training and being taught training methods and racing. In 1979, four members of the club went to the Youth Week. Tim Carpenter, Andrew Hillman, Dominic Windsor and Neil Mockridge Tim Carpenter won the most aggressive rider award (a pair of racing mitts). Jack Southerden completed riding 500,000 miles in 1997. Our President’s Opening Run was held at the beginning of March, on a glorious day, which probably encouraged such a large number of members to attend. In fact, the largest club run for several years made its way to Ashburnham, collecting refugees from Eastbourne Rovers en route. There were over 2,000 people and about 200 competitors at a “Sports Festival” organized by Hastings Warrior C.C. at the Central Ground on Saturday, August 18th. The riders gathered at the Ewe & Lamb pub in Wittersham on Saturday where they drank all evening and then collapsed and slept on the floor till the morning. I don’t know how this event happened, or how cyclists became involved, as the itinerary produced by Union Sportive Argenteuillais, USA, doesn’t mention cycling. It seems like we were an add on, possibly something to do with John Davies. As I lived 20 miles away, I only saw anybody from the club at weekends. As i understand it this was a cultural exchange between Hastings and Argenteuil Paris. Everything paid for. There were teams of football, judo and I think athletics, plus us bikies. The coach picked me up in Rye, it was packed plus 5 bikes up the centre isle. The bikes were loaded onto the boat, hanging by their front wheels and craned into the hold. We had a smooth crossing, John Davies and his wife offered us cake, Lynn, Martin and myself had been warned about this, so didn’t partake. Those who did were quite happy and merry. John Davies and his wife had friends in Paris, so they went to visit them. We were put up by, CSM Puteux. M & Mme Segard, of that club and became our Director Sportives. We stayed in a sort of hotel, I think that it was a brothel, a lot of coming going all night, plain concrete staircase, made a lot of noise. In the bedroom there was a wash basin and Lynn And Martins first encounter with what they thought was a French foot bath (Bidet), they hadn’t seen one before, I had encountered Bidets in 1961 when I went and watched 3 stages of The Tour de France. As I was an electrician, the wiring shook me in the toilets, no door handle just a sliding bolt to close the door, only thing was, one wire went to the bolt and another wire to the fastening catch, slide the bolt and the light came on. It meant that the bolt and its fastening were very much LIVE. William Wingfield was proprietor of the “Rainbow” Engineering Works. Mr. James (“Jimmy”) Moren, one of Hastings crack cyclists at the end of the last century, died at the Royal East Sussex Hospital on Saturday [15 August 1941], at the age of 76. The 21st annual luncheon of the East Sussex Cycling Association, held at Langley, near Eastbourne, on 26th November [1967], brought together a large number of past and present associated members, and George Parsons, former editor of "Cycling", was a special guest.

On Sunday the club’s 100 miles trial was held In conjunction with the E.S.C.A. event and won by J.Southerden, whose time of 4hr. 47 min. 32sec. gave him fourth place and third handicap in the East Sussex trial. B. Kemp was second 4hr. 49min. 23sec., and R. Downey. 5hr. 49min. 15sec., was third. Fastest was C. Robson (Eastbourne), with a new event record of 4hr. 38mln. 12sec.

The gathering was enlivened by the sight of Arthur drinking his his after lunch tea from a pint sized earthenware mug, apparently without either sugar or milk. Members who went home in the afternoon were treated to the spectacle of a well-known St. Leonards cycle dealer being unable to repair a puncture in his tyre, and having to substitute a new tube for the punctured one.
The next function which appeared to be attended en masse by the male members of the club (so complained two disgusted females who had bee riding around on their tod all day), was the Fellowship of Kent and Sussex Luncheon.
Cecil’s friends were saddened to hear rumours that the waitress at the George, Cranbrook, has sued him for breach of promise since this lunch.
10 members started out on the 100 in 8 run recently 8 of whom finished, 2 getting mislaid en route when the three tandems decided to have a burn up with a moped on the outward journey. Red Coussens was once again the first finisher, despite being attacked from the rear by a motorist in Sidley, and suffering shock and abrasions.
Meanwhile, amid this frenzy of social activity, our racing men have to been idle. David was a shock winner of our first 25, with a personal best time of 1.5.16. from Bob and Lyn. A week or two later David, Bob and Lyn won the E.S.C.A. Team Time Trial. David then went on to win the Junior 15 with an event record time of 38.42. Clive Davies recorded a time of 40.21 in the same event at his first try at racing. On the same day Jack became the first winner of the new trophy presented for the Rye-Hythe-Rye event. Since then Bob appears to have regained his form with personal bests 25 times of 1.2.29 in the Canterbury 25, and a 50 of 2.12.1 in the KCA event. Lyn and Martin both did personal bests in this latter event, with 2.17.34 and 2.21.21 respectively. In the evening 20 events David has managed a third personal best tome of 25.26. However, Bob is the fastest over this distance at the moment, with a time of 24.18 to his credit. Lyn has been trying hard in these events and has also managed to beat his previous best time.
With the sad thought that the only remaining social events are the Whitsun All Night Run and the Crazy Golf Competition with the Southborough Wheelers, I conclude these notes.

The main cycle races included the final of the East Sussex individual pursuit Championship, which was won by A. Moorhouse (Club); a 500 metres scratch, won by H. Cooper, Kentish W.; a one mile open handicap, won by W. Lane, Fountain C.C.; and a 5 miles scratch, won by W. Waters, S. London R.C. T. Baldwin (Club), third in the one mile handicap, was the only local rider to win a prize in the open cycle events.

They were then judged and handicapped by the amount of beer they had consumed before they rode off for a circuit of the Isle of Oxney.
The landlord was so impressed he presented the event with a silver tankard. This tankard is now the property of the Fellowship of Kent and Sussex Cyclists 
and is presented to the President for use during his term of office.
Club Racing in Paris 1962
A club rider took us to restaurants and cafes to get us feed and took us for rides about the area, the cafes were a bit crude, the toilets were holes in the floor with two footprints on where to place your feet. While we were riding around two things happened, one people would call out BAA BAA, it was Maurices beard, now there are a lot of bearded cyclists, then none. The other thing we kept getting, was there were a lot of mopeds about and as they passed, they would offer their back wheel to give us pace. Our club rider (I never found out his name) informed us that there was only one race that weekend and it was one of the selection races for the Tour de L’Avenir.
The race was in Puteux 80km, 4k lap, 20 laps. 1k up smooth tarmac, the finish would be at the top of this hill, with fast bends at the top with polished cobbles, 1k down rough cobbles at the bottom leading into a sharp narrow 90-degree bend and a very narrow-cobbled road, the rest was flat back to the start. At the signing on as in this country you hand over your licence, Maurice only had a CTC membership card, which he handed over, alongside the signing on official was a chap typing a stencil of the riders names, he printed out the start list of all the riders and was handing them out to the press and public. There were 115 riders, we were used to a maximum of 40. We were all called to the start in club and nation order, so when the race started we were near the front. The start was a rush up the hill and a mad rush down the hill to the narrow bend, it was so tight, the rider on my left lent on me, I lent on the rider to my right and round the bend we went, I never touched my brakes and of to the start of the next lap, after a few laps of this, I realised I was getting shoved back. So I put the pressure on up the hill to keep my place near the front. Maurice and Martin didn’t last long as they said the road was so rough it was shaking everything on their bikes loose, as to John tummy trouble so he said. Lynn dropped out about the time I crashed. On the fourteenth lap six riders made a gap, I went after them up the hill and on the fifteenth lap, over the top there was a bend, which I took much to fast, bang crash that was it, bent wheel when riders behind me rode over my back the wheel broken spokes and bent rim meant. End of race.
Now because we were racing, we missed our coach. M Segard our D.S. grabbed a motorcycle policeman, put me and my bike in his car. Police motorcycle up front, blue light flashing, M Sager car followed by Lynn, Martin and Maurice on their bikes took off, though red traffic lights, overtaking traffic to the Gare d Nore train station, bundling us onto the train, which left as we got on. On the trip to the port we passed our coach, and were able to wave to them. Meeting them to get on the boat together, our bikes were left behind in the rush. We got them back a week later.

Wingfield Cycles and the “Rainbow” Engineering Works
at Seaside Road St Leonards on Sea
In the 1896 September 5th edition of the Hastings and St Leonards Observer James found an excellent description of William’s Company premises in an article entitled “Local Engineering and Cycle Works. An Interesting Factory”
“Many persons investing in a cycle believing that in order to get a “wheel” of the first quality it is necessary to send to Coventry, or some other centre specially identified with the bicycle and tricycle producing industry. Accordingly, their orders are sent away, and money, which it would be to the advantage of the local weal to retain in the town, is spent elsewhere. It is probable, however that were they aware that they could be as well served in the borough, they would, on the principle of “keeping trade in the town” as far as possible, only be too pleased to place their orders locally. Yet such is the case, as all could prove for themselves by a visit to Mr W Wingfield’s “Rainbow” Engineering and Cycle Works, Seaside, Marina, St Leonards, or a brief conversation with some of our fastest riders who possess “mounts” which have been made at the establishment mentioned. Mr Wingfield only makes machines of one grade, the highest quality, and for lightness of weight, speed, finish, and strength they are hard to beat. His spacious premises are admirably fitted up with machinery embodying all the latest improvements, and a walk through the factory, where on one floor he turns out, for instance, a crushing machine weighing nine tons, for a brick yard, and on another floor a beautifully finished cycle scaling only 20lbs, affords an object lesson full of profit and interest.
The ground floor is devoted to the heavy and engineering work. Here a gas engine by Kerr, which drives all the machinery, is humming merrily away, and another object is an iron-planning machine. There are also a lathe for heavy work, drilling and shearing machines, the latter for cutting off bar iron. The forge is blown by a fan driven by steam, so that none of the workmen’s energy and strengths is expended on the old fashioned bellows. On the same floor there is also a brass furnace, Mr Wingfield doing a great deal of brass work. All the fittings for the Victoria Baths were cast here. On the ground floor steam engines and planning and moulding machines for woodwork for builders and saw benches are constructed. On the occasion of our visit a ten horsepower steam engine was to be seen ready for delivery.
There is plenty of storage room on the premises, from which most of the local builders have been fitted out with plant, engines and machines. Mr Wingfield who started the works in 1880 and has gradually brought them to their present flourishing state, designed and made a pair of pumps for the Victoria Baths drawing the water from the sea at the rate of 8000 gallons an hour. In fact he arranged the whole of Mr Jenkins establishment when it was fitted up, all the machinery being made at “Rainbow” Works. On the first floor are a variety of machines too numerous to mention, used for turning up the bicycles and other light work, such as drilling machines, lathes, a machine which will cut through a bar of cast steel 1 ½ inches in diameter in 10 minutes, machines for making hubs, machines for making cranks, and spindles, brazing stove and others which we have not space to enumerate.
Mr Wingfield makes his own patterns and cycles are built right throughout on the premises, even the hubs being finished on the Works. He constructs mounts to suit all weights and sizes, the finishing and enamelling being done on the top floor, where also the patterns are made. Machines have been turned out here to be sent to purchasers in Ireland, South Africa and America. The 20 lb path racer is not only “a thing of beauty and a joy forever” to its fortunate possessor, but it is one of the fastest mounts in the market. So well appreciated is the “Wingfield” that during the past Summer our energetic townsmen has always had on hand orders for about 25 machines. Recently he made a roadster, which, with gear case complete, only weighed 22 ½ lb. Several leading cyclists ride and have won prizes on “The Wingfield” for the construction of which their designer possess as complete and excellent a plant as could be desired, and that there is a great future for the machine there can be no doubt. But as we have conveyed, Mr Wingfield’s work is not confined to cycle making, his operations embracing branches of heavier engineering construction, for which he has gained a high reputation.”
James wondered if the above information was sound business preparation for the next article he found in the newspapers.
Around about November 21st 1897, there appeared another article in the HSLO entitled “A Local Cycle Company” inviting the public to subscribe to the capital of the Hastings and St Leonards Engineering, Cycle and Motor Car Company Ltd. The share capital was £2500 in pound shares and the directors were Messrs Councillor L O Glenister, Councilor Slade, R H Gabby, J C Miller and Newman Chennells. “All gentlemen whose excellent business qualifications are well known.” The company had been formed to acquire the engineering and cycle manufacturing business carried on for many years past by Mr William Wingfield under the style of the “Rainbow Cycle and Engineering Company” at Seaside Road, St Leonards. It described the plant as perfect, capable of turning out 500 ~ 600 cycles per annum, apart from general engineering work. Mr Wingfield’s machines had a deservedly high reputation, and there can be no doubt that was a great future for them. It was proposed to add the construction and repair of motorcars to the business, which the plant was capable of dealing with. Mr W Wingfield would act as the works manager. As a further incentive to subscribers the article continued to point out how convenient it was to be able to buy a first class machine and have it repaired locally in ones own town. The article finishes off by saying that the company hoped to secure central premises for the display and sale of their machines. Altogether, bearing in mind the current boom in cycles and the probable demand for motorcar, the opportunity must be regarded as very inviting to those seeking for a profitable investment. The list of application closes on November 28th 1897.
During the 1890s William’s brother Walter Wingfield was a member of the Hastings and St Leonards Cycling Club, and his name appears frequently in the early records of these two organisations. Contacting Chris Parker, a present day member of the HCC, I was fortunate to have the book, “Eighty Years Awheel” written by Jack Southerden brought to my attention. Whilst most of the clubs activities revolved around racing both road and field, (some held at the Central Cricket Ground) there were several social events enjoyed by members such as a combined publicity ride from Bexhill to Hastings and back by the St Leonards and Bexhill CC in 1890. Club members also attended out of area sports activities. In 1891 members of HCC and SLCC once again joined forces, in lantern ride raising money for local hospitals. Smoking concerts were a regular feature of the clubs activities, one being held on 30th September 1891. In 1894, it was reported that the clubhouse offered outdoor and indoor games, special teas and evenings of music, singing and dancing. Members of SLCC often joined H&SLCC at the clubhouse for tea and social events. The H&SLCC produced a magazine called the “Record”, from May 1893. In the July 1898 edition of the “Record”, an article entitled “The Glorious 20th July The Meeting at the Clubhouse” Over 200 cycled there and 60 others travelled by wagonette. Tea was provided and then they moved to the sports ground for a first class programme of races. After followed a series of amusing races, including the Obstacle, Slow Race (ladies only, demonstrating great control and won by Miss Lawes) This was followed by the Potato Race and the Needle and Thread Race for ladies and gentlemen, won by Mr Furbank and Miss March. There was also an egg and spoon race. Various games were held afterwards such as cricket, tennis, quoits and an al fresco concert on the lawn. During the return journey there was a stop at the Bo Peep Arch for stragglers to catch up. Then the captain led the party along the seafront to HQ at the Castle Hotel where friends and visitors assembled to witness the homecoming of the club.
From 1894 a W Wingfield begins to appear in the records of the Club. (This is most likely to be Walter, as his photograph in cycling dress appears in the front page of Adrienne’s catalogue) That year he was winner of the one-mile local riders handicap at the Whit Monday meeting in the Central Ground. W Wingfield also came second in the one-mile open handicap. In 8th August annual race meeting held at the Central Ground, Walter came third in the one-mile open handicap. This meeting was blighted by rain, with a low attendance. The weather made the track bad and caused several spills. Apparently a heavy financial loss was incurred.
In 1895 Walter Wingfield, Newman Chennells and J Moren, all members of the club won events at three separate meetings on August Bank Holiday. Later in the year Walter won another 3-mile open cycle handicap at the “Sports at Hastings” which was attended by about 3500 even though the weather was bad. The first prize at the Club Annual race meeting on Thursday 12th September 1895 was a cycle presented by the Rainbow Cycle Works of St Leonards. Offered for the one-mile handicap open to Sussex and the Folkestone CC it was won by N Chennells (H&SLCC) The J Mastin trophy for the club 5-mile handicap was also won by N Chennells (scratch) by 5 yards, in 14 minutes 7 seconds. Walter Wingfield (50 yards) was second. Walter was also the 5th member of the successful team race. In the same year Walter also made a “sensational” time of 2 hours 41 minutes (a time which stood as a local best for many years) in a 50 mile race, “unpaced, over an out and home course from Bo Peep Railway Arch to Ringmer and back” A special medal for the best time of the season was offered by the SLCC and the “honours and record fell to Walter Wingfield”
Walter and J Hide, another member of the H&SLCC, were the only members who took part in the race meeting at Bexhill on August Bank Holiday Monday 1896. Several members were competing elsewhere. Between 7000 and 8000 people attended attesting to the popularity of cycling at this time. The races were held on a specially banked track at the cricket ground attached to the Old Manor House. Earl de la Warr offered prizes valued at £250. Walter gained third place in a one-mile amateur handicap. The clubs annual race meeting was held at the Central Ground on September 16th. With good weather and a fine number of competitors, he gained second place in three different races. He also gained the fastest time of 32 minutes and 42 seconds in a 10 miles out and home handicap road race from Cripps Corner to Udimore and back on Wednesday June 3rd. Walter again won the SLCC 50 miles competition in 2 hours and 54 minutes with Newman Chennells second and E Head third.
In the same year 1896 on November 14th an interesting report appeared in the HSLO November 21st edition entitled “Local Cyclists Amongst the Motors”, “Newman Chennells our local champion and Mr William Wingfield, another clever local cyclist were among the many cyclists who started with the motor car procession from London to Brighton. Mr Chennells was the first cyclist to arrive in Brighton after the first motorcar, driven by Mr Harry J Lawson. He presented a sorry spectacle, his garments bedecked with mud. William Wingfield was not so lucky. His machine was totally wrecked near Thornton Heath, where a horse and cart knocked him down, the wheels actually passing over him and his “bike”. After being picked up unconscious and taken to a nearby house, his injuries were attended to and he was able to continue his journey to Brighton by train.”
Walter again gained top three positions in the races of 1897 throughout the year and at the Annual Road Race organised by the club. A 2-mile open handicap the same year was won by E Stead, with Hughes second and also featured an E Wingfield in third place. This can only have been Walter and William’s brother Edward. Edward also took second in the Open Mile Club Championship at the Annual Race Meeting in a time of 2 minutes 8 seconds. William and Walter did well in the club’s short distance road handicap races. At an 11-mile event in July, Walter did an actual fastest time of 32 minutes 45 seconds and in the August 18 mile event he achieved a wining ride from scratch in 55 minutes. This race included a reference to “Walter fastest of the Wingfield brothers” and the other brother was most likely to have been Edward, as his name had recently started to appear in the Club records this year. For the third consecutive year Walter also won the SLCC 50 mile competition by 6 ½ minutes in 2 h 42 m. I was interested to note in “80 Years Awheel” that road racing was abandoned the following year because of problems from the public, Police and N C U. [3]
Walter appeared in the Whit Monday May 22nd 1899 Club sports meeting in which he rode well being the only local man in the races. He came second in the one-mile open handicap and first in the two-mile open handicap.
From 1900 onwards the Wingfield brothers disappeared from the record books and it is tempting to believe that this was about the time that both William and Walter moved to Willesden, North London. However, several of their children are registered at Hastings. Another late reference in the July 1897 edition of the “Record”, mentions that the club house was formerly opened at Hooe, where a tea and a smoking concert took place at which Mr W Wingfield acted as accompanist. Was this William or Walter? Messrs R T Watkinson, Sorrell, Holloway, Miller, W J Ockenden, Colbran and Hemmings performed songs.
In the May 1900 edition of the “Record” there appeared a photograph of a new convertible tandem, patented locally by Messrs Watts and Wingfield. “The machine has a convertible back seat, and the patent is in the converting parts, which allow the machine to appear either as a perfect model of a gentleman’s tandem or with a very elegant lady’s back seat”

Obituary of James "Jimmy" Moren (Hastings Observer 23 August 1941)
Brought up in the grocery business. he worked for his father in Bohemia Road after leaving school. He then changed his occupation, and his exceptional interest In cycle racing coincided with his employment with Mr. George Jenkins in his cycle business. Later he returned to his old trade and opened grocery business in Southwater road where he remained for very many years.
As a racing cyclist. Mr Moren made his bow to the public In 1884 at Bank Holiday athletics meeting at the Central Ground at Hastings. where mounted on a 52 inch ordinary he gained first place In an open race. A year later he created something of sensation locally initiating the " 100 miles road record." He accomplished the 100 miles in the then phenomenal time of 11 hours 47 minutes, and for this feat the Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle and Tricycle Club, of which he was a member, presented him with a silver medal. The 100 miles record became very popular with local cyclists, but Mr Moren monopolised the honours until 1892, in which year he covered the distance In 7 hours 3 minutes.
During his career Mr. Moren frequently rode up the Castle Hill, and was the first to attempt the slope from Wellington-Square to the West Hill to the terminus the lift.
In 1899. when he was honoured with the captaincy of the local Cycling Club, he was described "the most brilliant handicap rider In Hastings." His speciality was long distance riding, and on several occasions he won the Mastin Challenge Cup—of which he became permanent holder—starting from scratch and conceding starts up to 450 yards.
Up to 1900 Mr. Moren had competed in over 300 races, and won 107 prizes. He was connected with the local Cycling Club for many years, and was one of its oldest members, if not the oldest. He frequently arranged dances in aid the club, and was himself a keen dancer.
As a member of the local volunteer force of cyclists he rode at the great Military Exhibition held at Chelsea. The race was open to all England and only missed being first in the final by inches. The 62 competitors included the leading cycling stars of the Kingdom.
In addition to cycling, Mr Moren was very fond of sea and river fishing, and was also a keen gardener. He was a member of the Bohemia Conservative Club for many years.
On retiring from business. Mr Moren and his daughter went to live at 97 Battle Road, St. Leonards.
The funeral took place on Thursday at the Borough Cemetery, the Rev. John Daniel, minister of Chapel Park Road Baptist Church, St. Leonards, officiating.
The immediate mourners were Miss W. Moren (daughter). Mr. and Mrs. Hodges. Mrs. Upton, Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Brooker, Miss Wallis, Mrs. Dann. Mrs. Busbridge. Miss Hewlett. Mr. Baker; Mrs. Mlddleton (friends).

The Bicycle Club.—The half-yearly meeting of the Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle Club was held at the Swan Hotel on Thursday evening. Mr A J Lovett was elected vice-president; Mr E C Gilbert, captain ; Mr. T Butcher, sub captain; Mr W Carswell, secretary; whilst Mr. A J White was re-elected treasurer. The rules were revised, and the future meetings will be held at the Swan Hotel the first Thursday in every month, at 8 o'clock p.m. The club is in a flourishing state, there being a good balance in hand. |

Hastings and Leonards Bicycle Club.—A quarterly meeting of the above club was held at the Swan Hotel on Thursday evening last, when there was good attendance of members, the captain, Mr E C Gilbert, occupying the chair. The resignation of the sub-captain, Mr T Butchers, was accepted with regret, and Mr S Philcox was unanimously elected to fill the poet. The captain and other members decided to attend Sussex Bicycle Association meeting, to be held Brighton August 18th, to represent the club. Several new members were enrolled - Meets for general runs are held at the Swan Hotel, Highstreet, on every Wednesday, at seven o'clock. |

The Pedestrian Fete [6 August 1977], which has now become an annual event, took place, as usual, in the Central Cricket and Recreation Ground, where a large concourse of spectators assembled to witness the running. The entries were numerous, and some of the races were a most exciting character. One of the chief features of the programme was the bicycle race, which was watched with great interest, and which fully justified the anticipations of the spectators that it would afford good sport. The weather could not possibly have been finer, and everything passed off most successfully. During the afternoon the band, of the Hastings Rifle Volunteers was in attendance, and performed excellent programme of music. , Mr. G P Finn was handicap per, usual, with Mr F W Nichols as starter, and Mr H Cheal a referee. The general arrangements were ably carried out Mr S Watling. The following were the results of the various races: [...] Two Miles handicap Amateur Bicycle Race – 1st prize, silver cup, value seven guineas. 2nd, silver cup, value three guineas; 3rd, silver medal with gold centre; 4th, a silver medal: in two heats : ten times round the course. Five started in the first heat. 1st. C Fitzgerald. Ashford (220 yards); 2nd, C W Nicholas, Brighton Bicycle Club (160 yards). Second heat: five started. A most exciting race for first position took between G Kent Tunbridge Wells (200 yards), and F East, Surrey Bicycle Club (15O yards), each taking alternate positions amidst the greatest excitement, the former winning by about three feet. H Hart, of Eastbourne Bicycle Club, who rode well, was a good third. The first two in the heats competed in the final, which was a very close contested race. Kent, who came first in the last heat, soon dropped to the rear, virtually leaving the race to the other three, who kept close together during the last few laps. East was the favourite, but at the last he was obliged to give way a little to his two opponents, who put it on in gallant style. All three came in at the last very close together to tremendous shouts of applause, and the greatest excitement and enthusiasm, as follows :—C Fitzgerald (Ashford), 1st; C W Nicholas (Pickwick Bicycle Club). 2nd; F East (Surrey), 3rd and G Kent [Tunbridge Wells] 4th. |

Bicycle Club.—The annual meeting of the members of the Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle Club was held at the headquarters, at the Swan Hotel, on Thursday evening. There was a good attendance. The following were re-elected without opposition—Mr A J Lovett, vice president; Edward C Gilbert, captain; S Philcox, sub-captain; W Carswell, hon. secretary; A J White, treasurer. The following business was also transacted: —The machines kept for the use of learners were ordered to repaired; fresh rules were directed to be printed; and the usual weekly runs arranged. The books, which had been previously audited, showed a substantial balance in hand. The proceedings terminated with vote of thanks to the Chairman for the great interest he had taken the club since its formation. |

The Bicycle Club. The annual dinner in connection the Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle Club, which is now in a more flourishing state than it has been since its formation, took place at the Swan Hotel on Wednesday evening, when about twenty sat down to a most sumptuous spread, served up in Host Collins's well-known style. The chair was occupied by Mr A J Lovett, vice-president of the Club, and the vice-chair by Mr E C Gilbert, captain; and there were also present, Mr C B Gaitakell, Mr T Gilbert, Mr French (captain of the Maidstone Bicycle Club), Mr Butchers, Mr White (treasurer), Mr T Ainsworth, Mr F Ellis, Mr J Stace, Mr Carswell (secretary), Mr Sims, Mr Reed, Mr Philcox (sub-captain) Mr Crissford, Mr Wellerd, Mr Veness and Mr A Lovett jun. The cloth having been cleared, those present having 'charged' their glasses, The Chairman gave the health of 'The Queen, and the rest of the Royal Family' which was drunk with enthusiasm. Mr E C Gilbert next gave the toast of 'The Army, Navy, and Volunteers'. The former were too well known to them to need any remarks on their behalf from him. Of the volunteers he could only say that they had two or three corps in the town, and he thought they were as good as any throughout the kingdom. (hear hear.) He coupled with the toast the name of Mr. George Hutchings. Mr Hutchings in response, said he was not at the present time a member of the rifle corps, but be had served his three years, which he thought every young man ought to do, and he then left on the condition that he was to join again if he was ever wanted by Captain Cooper. In conclusion, he thought that the honour of England would be best served by the maintenance of peace. Mr. Butchers proposed the next toast, and he supposed that why he had to do so was in consequence of his leaving the town, and of his being about the only member present of the original club. The toast he was sure they would drink a most cordial manner. It was 'Success to the Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle Club,' coupled with the name of Mr A J Lovett, the Vice-President. When the club was started, they first met at Miss Garrett's rooms in Castle-road, and they had been established but a very few weeks when they were introduced to Mr Lovett. That gentleman had been a kind help to them since that time through many difficulties, and the club would not be in the flourishing state it then was if it had not been for him (Mr. Lovett). He had also supplied them with a bicycle for learning, and introduced a new member in his son, who, though the youngest, was the pluckiest and best rider they had in the club. He (the speaker) himself thanked the Vice President personally for the business like manner in which he had carried out the duties of his office. He had known Mr. Lovett out of doors as a gentleman, and indoors as a thorough business man. He had much pleasure in proposing the toast. Mr Lovett returned them his sincere thanks for the kind manner in which they had drunk his health, and also Mr. Butchers for the way in which he had spoken of him. With reference to the club itself, they could take a very cheerful view of the case. He saw around him all the faces that he had the pleasure of seeing last year, and believed that they were steadily increasing in numbers. They had several very good riders, some were coming on, and he thought they would come on very well indeed. The had had some talk of challenging other clubs, and trying to win prizes; if not that, to give some away, they had such a good sum in hand. Last year they had a substantial balance in hand, but this year there was a still larger one. If 'they went on in the future as they had done in the past they were sure to succeed. He again thanked them for the kind manner in which, they had received the toast. The Chairman said he had to propose a toast was sure they would all drink with pleasure, and it was really the most important one of the evening —"The health of the Captain, Mr E Gilbert." (Applause.) He had all the drudgery to do, to pick out the muddy parts of the road, and to keep the recruits away from them. He was a kind of monthly nurse. He encouraged alI those that could ride, and tried to make those ride who could not do so; and the least they could do was to drink to his good hearth. Mr Gilbert, in response, said he in no way deserved the praise their- Vice-Presidet had given him; he could not say much with regard to the club after that gentleman's speech. He (the speaker) would always do his best carry out the duties, and he hoped they would have many pleasant runs during the year. He again thanked them, and said it would be his pleasure to do his best for the club—which he hoped would prosper in every way. The Chairman gave " The sub Captain, Mr S Philcox." That gentleman always made himself agreeable, and kept the young recruits from, looking too much after the girls. (Laughter.) He did not know what they should do without him, as he was very useful as well as ornamental. Mr Philcox, in responding, said that if the club needed his assistance at any time he should be most happy to give it. The little he had done for the club had been done most willingly. He thanked them most heartily for the manner in which they bad drunk his health. Mr C Wellerd gave "The health of the Secretary, Mr. Carswell," and in doing so said be was glad that they had chosen that gentleman for their secretary, he was all that could be desired, and had done all he could for the benefit of the club. Mr Carswell returned them his most hearty, thanks. They were a young club, and it was rather difficult to establish one of that kind, the sport not being so popular as many others. He trusted they would all do their best, and work together to keep the club established. They were in a flourishing condition, and as regarded the funds, they had a satisfactory balance. Mr S Philcox proposed "The Health of the Treasurer.' Mr White responded in humorous speech. Mr E Gilbert then gave "Other Clubs," coupled with the name of Mr. French, Captain of the Maidstone Club. Mr. French thanked them for the hearty manner which they had received the toast. He was happy to say that thought bicycling was on the increase. With reference to his own club, he was sure they would be pleased to meet them at any time, and the Maidstone Club wished their Hastings brethren every success. Mr White gave "the Visitors," coupled with the name of Mr T Gilbert. Mr. Gilbeert thanked them for coupling his name with the toast, and assured them that he was very pleased to meet them there. He was happy to hear that the club was in such prosperous state, and he trusted to see them going on improving. The remaining toasts were "The Ladies," proposed by Mr Reed and responded to by Mr. Gaitskell; "The Press," proposed by the Chairman and responded to Mr Hutchings ; " Mr. French, the Pianist; and "The Host and Hostess." The Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle Club. Half-yearly meeting. The half-yearly meeting of the Hastings and St Leonards Bicycle Club was held, at the club-room, Swan Hotel, on Thursday evening, when the chair was occupied by the Vice President, Mr. A. J. Lovett: and amongst those present were Mr T Gilbert (Captain), Mr A J White (Treasurer), Mr W Carswell (Secretary), Mr Smith, Mr Reed, Mr A Sims, Mr A Lovett, jun., and Mr T Stace. The Chairman called upon the Secretary to give them short statement to hew they stood. The Secretary said that at the last half-yearly meeting they had a balance in hand of £3 8s. 6d. The members' subscriptions since that time had amounted to £3 10s., making total of £6 18s 6d. After all expenses had been paid, there would be balance hand of £4 8s. There were eighteen subscribing members and eight honorary members at present. Four new members where then proposed, and the two representatives of the local press present (the Observer and Chronicle) were made free members. The election of officials was then proceeded with, as follows:-Vice-President, Mr A J Lovett; Captain, Mr E C Gilbert; Sub-Captain, Mr S Philcox; Treasurer, Mr A J White; Secretary, Mr W Carswell; Committee (in addition to officers of the club), Mr C Wellerd, Mr A Sims, and Mr W Cutting. The rules of the club wen then gone through, and several alterations made. It was also decided to have regulations for riding, the first- and most important being that each member should have a bell affixed to his machine when riding in the evening after dusk, when he was travelling through crowded thoroughfares. The others were principally instructions as to the orders of the Captain and Sub-Captain. The removal of the head quarters to a more central position of the borough was next taken into consideration. Mr E C Gilbert said he had seen Mr Donald, of the Seaside Hotel, who had stated that he should be happy to place a room at the disposal of the club. The position would be a more central one, and more convenient to the members. He moved that the head-quarters be removed to the Seaside Hotel. . In answer to one of the members, Mr Gilbert said the terms would be the same as they had the present room on. Mr Sims seconded the motion, which was carried. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings. There will be a meet of the club on Good Friday, when the members will ride to Hawkhurst where they will be met by the Maidstone Club. |

The Pedestrian Fete. The annual Grand Pedestrian Fete was held in Central Cricket and Recreation Ground on Monday last, when about 3000 spectators assembled in the ground to witness the running, while large numbers gathered on the outside, especially in Portland-place. The ground, owing the recent falls of rain, was very heavy, and not all favourable for the running, but notwithstanding this, the competitions were in some cases very close, and of most exciting nature. A great attraction in the proceedings was the two miles handicap amateur bicycle race, for which there were ten entries. This event was watched with great interest, and throughout the race loud cheering was heard from all sides the competitors passed. During the afternoon military band was in attendance, and performed several selections of music. The general arrangements were ably carried out by Mr S Watling, while Mr H Cheal officiated as starter, and Mr G F Finn as referee. The refreshment stalls were under the management of Mr H Love, of the Pilot Inn. The fallowing are the results of the various races: ... Two Miles Handicap Amateur Bicycle Race. First prize, a silver cup, value seven guineas; second a silver cup value three guineas; third, silver medal with gold centre; fourth, a silver medal. In two heats. The first two in each heat to compete in the final . The winners of the heats were - in the first, C Fitzgerald Ashford (220 yards start), and J Horn, Lombard BC (300 yards); in the second, E Runtz, Pickwick BC (200 yards), and H P C. Hare, Tunbridge Wells (230 yards). The racing in both heats was very exciting, and a good speed was maintained throughout, in spite of the unfavourable nature of the ground. The final heat resulted as follows: 1st E Runts; 2nd, J Hord; 3rd C Fitzgerald; 4th H P C Hore. The prizes were presented to the successful competitors by Mr. H Devlin at the finish of each race. |

Accident to the Captain of the Bicycle Club.—Last (Friday) evening, between seven and eight o'clock, Mr. Gilbert, the captain of the Hastings Bicycle Club, was riding down High-street, and when nearly opposite the Swan Hotel, he accidentally fell of his machine and struck his head on the edge of tile kerb. He was at once picked and assisted into the hotel, where he was seen by Dr Ashenden, who found that he had fortunately received no serious injury, though was very much shaken and his face was cut in several places. |

Central Cricket Ground -. Notwithstanding the counteracting influence of other attractions on Monday last, the annual Pedestrian Fete at the Central Cricket Ground was well attended, there being about 2,500 people present during the afternoon. The weather was all that could be desired, the only fault being that it was a little to warm between three and four o'clock... Two Miles Handicap Amateur Bicycle Race - 1st prize value £7 7s; and value £3 3s; 3rd vaue £1 0s; 4th value £1 - H Joy St Leonards (350 yards start), 1: J T East, Surry RC (scratch) 2: H Hart Eastbourne BC (200 yards) 3: T A Denne East Kent BC (400 yards): H Croucher, East Kent BC (320 yards) 0, T C Berrington Dulwich (250 yards) 0. The races were hardly concluded and the rain here began to fall, and the ground was rapidly deserted. The promoters of the fete are to he congratulated upon the order and decorum apparent, and upon the success of their efforts to provide recreation and amusement for the people. |

Pedestrian Fete. The annual grand Pedestrian Fete was held the Central Cricket and Recreation Ground, and was witnessed by between 3,000 and 4,000 spectators. The programme comprised three handicaps, also two miles handicap bicycle race, and in most of the heats of the several events there were some exciting contests. Mr S Watling, formerly of Hastings, but now of Brighton, was manager, and was ably assisted by Mr Shaw, who officiated as starter, Mr G F Finn, of Canterbury, handicapper, Mr H Cheal, referee, Mr. Develin, and a committee composed of local gentlemen... Two Miles Bicycle Race.—First prize, silver cup value seven guineas; 2nd, silver cup value three guineas; 3rd, silver medal with gold centre 4th, silver medal. This was rode in two heats. In the first, J T East Surrey BC, who started at scratch, won after a splendid race; H Hart, Eastbourne, 200 yards start, being second; and H. Croucher, East Kent Invicta B.C., 320 yards, third. In the second heat, H Joy, St. Leonards, 250 yards, was first T A Denne, East Kent Invicta BC, 400 yards, second; and T C Berrington, 250 yards, third. The first two in each heat rode in the final, Joy being the winner, with East second, Hart third, and Denne fourth. Denne, a young lad, was loudly cheered during, the race for the plucky way in which he rode, and Mr. Develin on handing him the fourth prize complimented him on his riding. |

Hastings and St Leonards Bicycle Club. The quarterly meeting of the above Club was held on Thursday evening at the Seaside and Pier Hotel, under the presidency of A J Lovett Esq. A good number of members were present. The Chairman first of all called upon the Secretary (Mr William Carsell) to read the report, the substance of which was follows: Financial report for the half year April 4 to October 3. 1878.
The report showed that 11 members had joined during the half-year, and one resigned, the present number being 31. The CHAIRMAN, in thanking the secretary for his report, said he had one little thing to mention, for which he was extremely sorry, and that was that their captain (Mr Edward G Gilbert), who had given the club so much attention, had had the misfortune of meeting with an accident, which would incapacitate him from riding for some time. He wished to thank him for the manner in which he had attended to the various meetings of the club. The CAPTAIN thanked Mr. Lovett for letting them have his name upon their club programmes, and for his attention with which he had favoured them. He proposed that gentlemen should continue his office as vice president of the club. He would be unable to hold the captaincy for some time, owing to his recent accident, as be would not be able to ride for some two or three months; however, he hoped some day to be able to ride again, end moved that the captaincy should be left open for a month. The CHAIRMAN thought it would be better to leave it open for three months, when he hoped Mr. Gilbert would be restored, or that be should continue or that he should continue his office during the three months. The CAPTAIN absolutely agreed to remain in office until the next meeting. SUB-CAPTAIN. Respecting the election of sub-captain, it was agreed that that office should be raced for. SECRETARY. Mr William Carswell was re-elected secretary of the club, and presented with the thanks of the members, for the efficient manner in which he had discharged his duties. TREASURER. Mr Alfred J White was re-elected treasurer of the club. COMMITTEE. The following is the result of the balloting for the three members who should act on the committee of the club: Messers Wellerd 7 [votes], Stills 7, Cutting 6, Haman 4, Veness 4, Packton 4 and Simkins 4. A RACE FOR AN OFFICE. The Captain proposed that Mr Stile should preside over the run to be held on Wednesday, the 16th last, at four o'clock, for the sub-captaincy, the riders to meet at Carlisle Parade, after which the members and friends should meet for a social meeting at the Seaside and Pier Hotel, at half past eight o’clock. [see 19 October 1878 report] PRIZES. It was agreed that the sub-captain should be presented with a bicycle bugle, and that a second prize be offered to the second rider, of a bicycle lamp and bells. CLUB MEETINGS. The social meetings of the club were proposed to be held every Thursday at the Hotel, at half-past eight o'clock, for the members and friends of the club. The third Thursday in the month however was to be reserved for the business meetings. |

In the evening a supper was held at the Seaside Hotel, the headquarters of the club, when Mr. Style was presented with the first prize, a silver bugle, the second prize being a bicycle lamp and bells, and the third a silver flask. |

The half-yearly meeting of the members of the Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle Club was held at the Seaside Hotel on Thursday evening, the chair being occupied Mr. Lovett. There were also present Mr E Gilbert, Captain; Mr Styles, Sub-Captain; Mr F Amon, Secretary; Mr White, Treasurer; and Messrs. A Lovett, jun., G Hutchings, Palmer, McCormick, Beckton, E Timewell, Sparks, Weller, Simms, Akers, Hinton, Veness, and Reed. The minutes the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The report, which was as follows, was read and adopted : 'The Committee present to the members their annual report and balance-sheet, from which it will be seen that the Club prospering in satisfactory manner, both financially and as regards an increased number of members. The Club runs for the past season, although enjoyable and successful, were not numerous. This was, no doubt, owing, in measure, to the inclemency of the weather. During the past quarter nine members have been elected, and one only (in consequence of leaving Hastings) had left the Club. The Committee particularly desire that members will endeavour to ' turn out' in satisfactory numbers for the weekly runs during the approaching season, which will be posted on the notice-beard in the usual way. The balance-sheet showed that after paying all expenses there would be £2 1s 6d. in hand. The receipts amounted to £8 16s.' The next business was the election of officers. Mr. E Gilbert said he had been trying to persuade Mr. A Lovett, sen. [A J Lovett], to act as president of the Club, but he had not succeeded in doing so. He therefore moved that Mr Lovett and Mr O Travers should be elected Vice-Presidents, the higher office being left vacant. Mr Amon seconded, and the motion was carried. Mr. Lovett said he would always be happy to be of any assistance to them, and he had no doubt he might say the same for Mr Travers. The following officers were also elected: Captain, Mr E Gilbert; Sub-Captain, Mr Styles; Bugler, Mr Palmer; Secretary, Mr. Frederick Amon; Treasurer, Mr. White. It was proposed that the sub-captaincy should be raced for, but the motion was lost. The following gentlemen were elected as committee, together with the officers the Club: — Mr G Hutchings, Mr Simms, and Mr T Beckton. "Success to the Club Runs" was then enthusiastically drank, after which some discussion ensued with reference to a list road-rules, etc, which had been drawn up by the Captain and Sub-Captain. These were of a most useful character and were eventually adopted. The opening run of the Club was announced to take place on Wednesday next, at four o'clock, the journey being to Robertsbridge and back. THE PEDESTRIAN FETE IN THE CRICKET GROUND. A pedestrian fete was held in the Central Cricket and Recreation Ground in the afternoon of Monday [14 April 1879], but owing, no doubt, to the dampness of the ground and the threatening aspect of the weather, the spectators were not nearly numerous as on previous similar occasions. The several events on the programme were carried out under the management of Mr S Watling, of Brighton, Mr. G F Finn officiating as handicapper and referee, and Mr H Cheal as starter. The band of the Hastings Rifle Corps was engaged, and played selections during the afternoon. Mr H Love, of the Pilot Inn, supplied the refreshments. The results of the racing were follows : ... Two Miles Handicap Amateur Bicycle Race. —This race was restricted to members of the Hastings Bicycle Club only. There were eight entries, and it was run in two heats. In the first Lovett [A Lovett jun], 20 yards start, won and Gilbert, scratch, was second. In the second, Philcox, 10 yards start, was first; and Styles, scratch, second. The final heat was won by Lovett, Philcox being second, and Gilbert, third. THE HASTINGS AND ST. LEONARD BICYCLE CLUB. FIRST ANNUAL RACE MEETING. The first annual race meeting in connection with the Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle Club, was held in the Central Cricket and Recreation Ground, on Wednesday. The weather was most inauspicious, heavy showers of rain falling during the afternoon; the attendance, therefore, was small. Mr Otho R Traver officiated as starter and Mr A J Lovett as judge. Mr French, of the Maidstone Bicycle Club, also assisted. The following are the results of the races :— One Mile Club Championship Scratch Race. 1st prize, Championship Medal, presented Mr A J Lovett; 2nd, handsome Inkstand, presented by Messrs. Randle and Jenner : 3rd, Telescope, presented by Mr. Reed.
Palmer went to the front at starting, and maintained his lead throughout. Davis was second, and kept so for about half-distance, when he was overtaken by Lovett, Philcox, and Thompson. At the finish the positions remained unaltered.
Gilbert had it all his own way, and won easily. Two Mile Handicap Mounting and Dismounting Race.—1st prize, a handsome-framed Painting, presented by Mr J Dearie; 2nd, a Biscuit Box, presented Mrs Story; 3rd. silver-plated Saloon Air Pistol, presented by Mr A J White.
Davis soon took the lead, and maintained it throughout, winning easily. Lovett, however, who was gaining ground, dismounted too late, and had to go back, thus throwing himself behind some distance.
Chesterfield won easily, having it all his own way with the good start given him. Beckton rode well for some distance, but he then gave up. Palmer was second and Style third. 150 Yards Slow Race.—1st prize, a Handsome Cup, presented by Mr C B Allen; 2nd, Flask, presented Mr H F Style.
All five competitors started, but the wind was evidently too strong for the slow pace at which the machines travelled, one after the other capsized until only Davis was left.
Lovett and E E Thompson were the only two who reached the winning-post, the others falling after the start.
Style and Beckton were the only two to go the whole 150 yards, and finished in the order named. Five Mile Club Championship Race.—1st prize, a Handsome Clock, presented by Mr. C B Gaitskelll; 2nd. Race glass, presented by Mr J C Brown, .of London; 3rd, a Gold Pin, presented Mr. J Fisher.
C. Davis went away with the lead, F Amon being second, Style third, and Thompson fourth. Amon soon passed Davis, however, but shortly afterwards fell back into second place. The third and fourth men kept close company, and gradually gained on their opponents, and eventually took first and second place, Davis being third. In this order they came in. Beckton met with accident and had to retire; Amon also capsized.
S S Thompson went away with the lead, Gilbert being second, Philcox third, and Lovett fourth. This order was maintained for sometime, when Thompson capsized, which threw him back into fourth place, about fifty yards behind Lovett. He, however, was soon up and at it again, being loudly cheered as he gained on the others. He soon overtook Lovett, and came in third, he having ridden exceedingly well. Gilbert was first, and Philcox second. One Mile Consolation Race (Open to Members riding in two of the previous races, and not winning a prize). 1st prize, a Writing Case, presented by Mr Otho R Travers; 2nd, a Gold Pencil Case, presented by Mr E C Gilbert; 3rd, Thermometer, presented by Mr F Amon.
This was the best race of the day, six starting. They kept in close company during the whole race. H. Davis was first, being about a foot in front of Beck. E. E. Thomson finished third, about the same distance in front of Hinton.
This was an excellent race, the competitors keeping well together for some time. Gilbert and Palmer then went a little ahead, and had a hard fight for first place. Gilbert, however, was misinformed as to the number of rounds, and lost a lead which he had obtained. He put on a spurt, but could not again overtake Palmer, who won by about a yard, Philcox being third.
Chesterfield again had everything his own way, and won by about 120 yards. A Lovett was second, and Style third.
Only two reached the goal, Beckton going in first and Lovett second. Lovett thus took first, and Beckton second prize.
This was a good race between Philcox and Gilbert, who kept re-passing each other, and had hard fight for first place. Gilbert eventually won by about ten yards. S S Thompson was third. The prizes were presented at the close of the race. |

The Pedestrian Fete The Annual Grand Pedestrian Fete took place in the Central Cricket and Recreation Ground on Bank Holiday. There was large attendance, as many as 5,000 people being present. The events consisted of four handicap races and a two-mile Amateur Bicycle Race. The entries to the races were exceedingly large, and the good number that came to scratch reflected great credit on the the Handicapper, Mr. H Cheal, who was also referee. Mr. S White acted as starter. Hastings & St Leonards Bicycle Club The annual meeting of the members of this Club was held at the Head-quarters, the Seaside and Pier Hotel, Thursday evening, Mr. A J Lovett being in the chair. There was a large number of members present. The Secretary's statement showed the Club to be a complete success in every way. The following officers were elected :—President, Sir. U J Kay-Shuttleworth, Bart., M.P. ; Vice-presidents, Messrs. A J Lovett, and O R Travers; Captain, Mr. E C Gilbert; Subcaptain, Mr. A Chesterfield; Hon. Secretary, Mr. F Amon; Treasurer, Mr. A J White; Bugler, Mr. C A Palmer. There were three retiring members on the Committee—Messrs. C Davis, Beckton, and Sims—and these offered themselves for re-election. Messrs. J Tutt, H F Style, and C Wellerd, were also proposed, and on a ballot being taken, the successful candidates were Messrs. C Davis, H F Styles, and J Tutt. Mr. E C Gilbert (Captain), referring to the general state the said he was very pleased to say the Club runs for the last quarter had been well attended. Two or three them, however had had be abandoned on account of the bad weather, but the whole, they were more successful than the previous quarter. Messrs. Sparks and Wollvin were elected members. It was decided that the whole of the members meet at head-quarters every Thursday, at 8.30, during the winter months. The revision of the rules was left to the Committee. It was announced during the meeting that the annual dinner would be held in November. A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the proceedings. |

Funeral of Bicyclist On Wednesday last the mortal remains of Mr. Charles Davis, eldest son of Mr. J. Davis, of Grand Parade, were conveyed to their last resting place the Borough Cemetery. Deceased was a member of the Hastings Bicycle Club, and several the members attended the funeral. Amongst them were Mr A T Lovett (Vice-President), Mr E Gilbert (Captain), Mr Chesterfield (Sub-Captain), Mr Palmer (Bugler), Mr F Amon (Secretary), Mr A J Lovett, Mr Chester, Mr. Styles, Mr. S. S. Thompson, Mr. E. Thompson, Mr. Hinton, Mr. Beckton, Mr. Beck, Mr. R Parker, &c. All the members wore their uniforms. |

The Cricket Ground Pedestrian Fete. The Grand Pedestrian Fete, organised by the Amalgamated Friendly Societies of Hastings, in the Cricket Ground on Monday and Tuesday, attracted large numbers of spectators, on the former day especially, when the sports were witnessed by some 4,000 people… Two Mile Amateur Bicycle Race - First prize, a silver cup, value £7 7s.; 2nd, a gold medal, value £3 3s.; 3rd, a silver medal, value £1 10s. For this race there were nine entries, divided into two heats. In the first heat the five competitors entered started, four of the riders being members of the Hastings Bicycle Club. 1 T Woolven, who had 260 yards start, was never overtaken, and won; 2 A J Lovett, with 200 yards start being 2nd; 3 G S Row, Hornsey BC the scratch man, 3rd; and 4 W Chesterfield 4th. 5 T Ellerback, 300 yards start, gave up on being passed by Woolven. In the second heat three of those entered started, the absentee being H H Arnold, of Hastings, who had 150 yards start 1 E C Gilbert, Hastings, 100 yards start, passed the winning post first; 2 M Pritchard, Druids BC, 25 yards, being 2nd; and 3 F Beck, Hastings, 300 yards, 3rd. It may be added that the latter competitor was very much out of form through recent indisposition. The final, which was run later on in the evening, was the most attractive feature of the programme, the two first each heat contesting, and the race was watched with a deal of interest. It was Woolven's first appearance at a racing meeting and, therefore, his qualities were not known; but his riding in the first heat was remarkably good, and it was predicted that he stood a good chance for the first or, at least second place in the final. Gilbert's riding was pretty well known as well that of Lovett, and it was naturally anticipated that the scratch man knew his way round. Woolven had a start of 260 yards, and he was followed by Lovett, Gilbert having 100 yards start of the scratch man. Lovett lost ground, and Gilbert passed in somewhat early part of the race. The scratch man, whose ""form"" was much admired, gradually drew towards his opponents, and having passed Lovett, reached Gilbert, and, with a fine spurt, slipped into the second place. Woolven had, throughout the race, carefully preserved his lead, riding in first rate form for a novice. Although the scratch man began to warm up, it was thought impossible that he could seize the lead, and at the close of the race 1 Woolven still unpassed, 2 Pritchard was second, and 3 Gilbert third. 4 [Lovett] |

A very pretty race. Gear [G D Gear], of Hastings, made the pace too hot, and fell back in the last lap. Time, 4mins 25 2-5th sec. Two Miles Open Cycle Handicap. Cycling The mystery run, led by Mr G Cotton, last Sunday was fairly well attended. Leaving via London-road and Silverhill, rough going was encountered through Silverhlll Park, Old Roar and Grange-road, and the riders then proceeded past Hurst Court, down Chown's Hill towards Three Oaks, then on to Westfield and through lanes to Sedlescombe, bearing left to Pay Gate Cottage, and then up Marley lane to Battle, The main road was followed via Kitchenham lane to Penshurst and the lunch destination, Ashburnham. Here the Eastbourne Club [Eastbourne Rovers CC] were met and, after various games, the Hastings party made for Woods Corner and Rushlake Green, the main road being followed to Herstmonceux, then left to Wartling and Pevensey, and over the old main road to Barnhorn and Little Common, continuing up Belle Hill to Bexhill and home to tea. Hastings Club Notes The run to Matfield on Sunday was enjoyed by a good muster. Leaving by way of Cambridge Road and the Harrow, the riders went on to Whatlington and Robertsbridge, and took the main road to Lamberhurst, here turning right for Brenchly and district and on to lunch at Horsmonden. Afterwards there was lane riding to Hartley, and the way now led to Bedgebury Park. After some rough going the party arrived at the lake and then went through the park to the main road and via Flimwell to tea at Swifsden. After games they made for home via Hurst Green and John's cross. Tomorrow (Sunday) Mr P Bliss [Percy Bliss] leads a mystery run leaving the Royle Oak at 9 am. All tea arrangements have been made. |

Hastings Club Notes The run to Leeds Castle and district was well attended. Leaving via Ore the riders reached Rye in good time, and the way then led through Playden, Iden, Wittersham, Tenterden and Biddenden to Headcorn for lunch. After travelling via Sutton Valence and Langley cross roads, they reached Leeds Village and Castle, and rode on through Harrietsham, Lenham, and Charing bearing right via Pluckley to Bethersden and High Halden. Tea was taken at Tenterden, the return journey being via Rolvenden, Northiam and Sedlescombe. Home was reached in good time after a trip of over 80 miles. Hastings Club Notes The mystery run led by Mr J Southerden [Jack Southerden] will leave the Royal Oak at 9 am tomorrow (Sunday). In its place last Sunday club riders had a run to Laughton via Sidley, Ninfield, Herstmonceux and Horsebridge. Lunch was taken at Laughton and the way then led to Ripe, Berwick and Polegate returning over Pevensey Marsh to Barnhorn, Little Common and Bexhill and then home by way of Silverhill. Members should note that prizes won last season will be presented next Saturday night at 7 o'clock by Mr Harry Smith in the club room at Calvert Road. The subscription has been halved for the duration of the war. This includes NCU third party insurance. |

Local Club Notes The run to Wateringbury was again well attended. Leaving by way of Harrow Hill, the main road was followed to Roberstbrdge, Flimwell and Lamberhurst. Lane riding brought the party to Horsmonden and Yalding, and they continued over the Pack Horse bridge to Wateringbury. Lunch was taken at Aylsford and afterwards they went on to Key Street and Bearsted. Here, owing to chain trouble, they had to make for Langley via Leeds village continuing to Sutton Valence and Headcorn to tea at Tenterden. The homeward run was via Witersham and Rye to Iclesham and Ore. Yesterday (Good Friday) members left Halton Church at 4 am for Salisbury, on the club's Somerset and Devon tour. |

Local Club Notes The club tour of the West Country was carried out without incident, the mileage being over 450 miles. Winchester, Salisbury and Wells Cathedrals were visited. At Wells the party heard the famous clock striking the hour. Clifton suspension bridge was another fine sight In the tour. The last day's run was from Amesbury Salisbury Plain. Local Club Notes The run last week took riders via Rye to Marden for lunch. Afterwards they travelled through lanes to Broughton Monchelsea to Sutton Valence crossing the main road to Pluckley and on to Hothfield Common and Ashford for tea. Tomorrow's Whitsun tour to Eastern Counties start from Christ Church, Ore at 5 am with breakfast at Maidstone at 7.30am Attempts were made on the Eastbourne and back record of 1hr 35mins with the following results: E Swanton 1hr 35mins 25secs: D Lowe 1hr 43mins 35secs: W Baker 1hr 48mins 20secs. Hastings Club Notes The run to Chiddingstone on Sunday was again well attended. Recently two attempts were made on the Eastbourne and back record as follows: Tandem by messers P Bliss [Percy Bliss] and S Powell [Sid Powell], which failed by 8 secs, their time being 1hr 28mins 8secs, against the record of 1hr 8mins [This was a standard time]. Solo attempt by Nr J Lynch, who failed by over 4mins, his time being 1hr 39mins 15secs, the record standing at 1hr 35mins. Both attempts were timed by Mr H Smith, and turned at Eastbourne by Mr G Prince. Other club members assisted at various points. Tomorrow a run to Reigate and district leaves the Royal Oak at 8am. Hastings Club Notes The run last Sunday was again well supported. Leaving via the Front, the route lay through Sidley and Herstmonceux to Horsebridge for a brief halt afterwards forward to East Hoathly and Uckfield, through the Forest road to Nutley and Wych Cross. From there, Forest Row and East Grinstead were made in good time, and the riders went on to Godstone for lunch via Felbridge and Blindley Heath. After traveling via Edenbridge to Ashhurst and Langton and the outskirts of Tunbridge Wells, Lamberhurst was reached by way of Bayham Abbey, and tea was taken at Swiftsden. An easy run home via Hurst Green completed an enjoyable 100 miles. For this weekend the club have two sections, one riding through the night for Rushden and Northampton, and the Sunday section leaving the Royal Oak for Chichester at 5am. Tea at Brighton at 5pm. Local Club Notes The run to Rushden and district was carried out without incident. Leaving after lunch on Saturday, the riders reached their destination via London, Bedford and Milton Ernest, covering a distance of 133 miles, in ten hours, which included all stops for refreshment. Sunday's run to Bognor and Chichester was also carried out satisfactorily. After breakfast Brighton, the coast road was followed via Worthing and Littlehampton to Bognor. Chichester was reached in time visit the cathedral and afterwards riders went forward to Arundel for lunch. The route then lay over undulating country to Crossbush, Broadwater and the Old Shoreham road to Brighton. After tea at Lewes, they had an easy run home via Ringmer, Horsebridge and Ninfield. Hastings was reached 8 pm and the mileage was over 150. Wednesday's social run is to Barnhorn and Hooe, leaving at 7 pm. To-morrow (Sunday) riders meet Christ Church, Ore, at 7am for a tour of Kent: tea at Stone 5 pm. |

Local Club Notes The run to Kent last Sunday started by way of Westfield and Northiam on to Rolvenden and Tenterden where, after a brief halt the riders proceeded to Biddenden and Headcorn. Leaving the main road for lane riding to Grafty Green and Lenham, they reach the lunch destination at Staliafield, afterwards continuing through lanes to Throwley, and eventually arriving at Sheldwich and the main road to Ashford. The tea destination was reached via Kingsnorth, Orlestone and Warehorne and the return run was via Wittersham, Underhill, Playden, Rye and Icklesham. Cycling Carries on One of the few sports which has not been affected greatly by the new regulations is cycling. Mr A Rome, the secretary of the local club, tells me that they are going ahead with their weekend tours as usual although the closing of a number of roads in Kent has forced them to revise some of their runs. The same remarks apply to the local section of the Cyclists' Touring Club. |

Hastings club notes The run last Sunday to and district was attended by the usual number and the way led via Battle, Robertsbridge and Flimwell, where, after a brief halt for refreshment, the riders continued to Pembury and Tonbridge. After lunch they went on to Hadlow and then to East Peckham, continuing through lanes to Goose Green and Hale Street. They took the main road to Paddock Wood and on past Mascalls Court Matfield Green, Kippings Cross and Lamberhurst Quarter. Hastings Club Notes The run last Sunday, which was again fairly well attended left via Icklesham and Rye over Romney Marsh to Ham Street and Ashford and over undulating country to Kemps Corner, Chilham and Canterbury for lunch. After a visit to the cathedral and the Dane John recreation grounds, the riders went on via Bridge and Bareham Downs to Dover and through Folkestone to the tea destination at Hythe. The homeward route was through Dymchurch and Ivychurch, Brookland and Rye, with a brief halt at Icklesham. Death of Mr Julius Mastin ... In his earlier days Mastin was ardent cyclist and was for some time captain of the old Hastings Cycling Club. One of his most treasured possessions was a stationery cabinet, presented him by the club on the occasion of his marriage. Incidentally, Mr. Mastin was one of the last people in the district to relinquish the old 'pennyfarthing' machines. Crack Cyclist Death of Mr 'Jimmy' Moren Mr. James ('Jimmy') Moren [James Moren], one of Hastings crack cyclists at the end of the last century, died at the Royal East Sussex Hospital on Saturday [15 August 1941], at the age of 76. Brought up in the grocery business. he worked for his father in Bohemia Road after leaving school. He then changed his occupation, and his exceptional interest In cycle racing coincided with his employment with Mr. George Jenkins in his cycle business. Later he returned to his old trade and opened grocery business in Southwater road where he remained for very many years. As a racing cyclist. Mr Moren made his bow to the public In 1884 at Bank Holiday athletics meeting at the Central Ground at Hastings. where mounted on a 52 inch ordinary he gained first place In an open race. A year later he created something of sensation locally initiating the '100 miles road record.' He accomplished the 100 miles in the then phenomenal time of 11 hours 47 minutes, and for this feat the Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle and Tricycle Club, of which he was a member, presented him with a silver medal. The 100 miles record became very popular with local cyclists, but Mr Moren monopolised the honours until 1892, in which year he covered the distance In 7 hours 3 minutes. During his career Mr. Moren frequently rode up the Castle Hill, and was the first to attempt the slope from Wellington-Square to the West Hill to the terminus the lift. In 1899, when he was honoured with the captaincy of the local Cycling Club, he was described 'the most brilliant handicap rider In Hastings.' His speciality was long distance riding, and on several occasions he won the Mastin Challenge Cup—of which he became permanent holder—starting from scratch and conceding starts up to 450 yards. Up to 1900 Mr. Moren had competed in over 300 races, and won 107 prizes. He was connected with the local Cycling Club for many years, and was one of its oldest members, if not the oldest. He frequently arranged dances in aid the club, and was himself a keen dancer. As a member of the local volunteer force of cyclists he rode at the great Military Exhibition held at Chelsea. The race was open to all England and only missed being first in the final by inches. The 62 competitors included the leading cycling stars of the Kingdom. In addition to cycling, Mr Moren was very fond of sea and river fishing, and was also a keen gardener. He was a member of the Bohemia Conservative Club for many years. On retiring from business. Mr Moren and his daughter went to live at 97 Battle Road, St. Leonards. The funeral took place on Thursday at the Borough Cemetery, the Rev. John Daniel, minister of Chapel Park Road Baptist Church, St. Leonards, officiating. The immediate mourners were Miss W. Moren (daughter). Mr. and Mrs. Hodges. Mrs. Upton, Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Brooker, Miss Wallis, Mrs. Dann. Mrs. Busbridge. Miss Hewlett. Mr. Baker; Mrs. Mlddleton (friends). Floral tributes were received as follows: —Wreath. Hastings rider P. Baker [Peter Baker] beat the cycling club's 11- year-old record for 25 miles by 1min 37sec on Saturday. In establishing the new time of 58min 59sec, he became the first Hastings rider to complete the distance in under an hour. Baker's triumph came in the Woolwich CC time trial, held on the A2 from Cobham. The event was won by the new national 25-mile champion, A. Engers in 51min 10sec. Baker was also in action in the Eastbourne Rovers 10, recording a time of 24min 53sec. M. Carpenter [Maurice Carpenter] recorded 26min 40sec and J. Southerden [Jack Southerden] 29min 32sec. Mrs A. Following a winter of long training miles in harsh conditions, Hastings and St Leonards Cycling Club members are beginning to stretch their legs with some early season racing. Several have been active in the Surrey and Kent road racing league series with John Willis, Frank Mcleod and Paul Panagi contesting the 3rd and 2/3rd category events. Young Chris Kitchenham, now in junior ranks after three successive years as a schoolboy, looks to be starting the season on a high note. Following his ninth place in the Sussex CA 25 mile time trial at Arundel earlier this month, he astounded fellow club members with a scorching 22 min 19 sec ride in the Elite CC 10 mile promotion at Brentwood on Saturday. In a class field featuring some of the south’s top riders, Chris swept to the 4.99 miles turn in less than 10 minutes, while averaging speeds in excess of 35 mph. On the return leg to the finish with the last half mile on tricky and narrow Essex lanes, he was hampered by a rising chill northerly wind which reduced his speed to just under the 25 mph barrier. Beaten into second junior position by a mere 15 seconds, Chris took consolation in the knowledge that his real speed training has not yet started. |

Cycling: Grey skies and a bitterly cold north wind greeted riders in Sunday’s 125 miles Tour of the Marshes event across Romney Marshes. John Willis, Guy Pike and Andy Hillman [Andrew Hillman] of Hastings and St Leonards Cycling Club, gave a good account of themselves against 20 professionals and 40 top amateur riders. The winds and high average speeds took their toll and most of the field, including the local trio, abandoned the race and opted for an early bath. Chris Kitchenham was first junior in a Kent CA 10 mile promotion on the Snodland bypass. He clocked 24mins 46secs. Event: |

Cycling: Sunshine and sleet showers brought mixed fortunes to members of Hastings and St Leonards Cycling Club at the weekend. Early starters in Saturday afternoon’s East Sussex CA 10 mile time trial at Whitesmith suffered the wort of the heavy sleet. Clive Piper, 14, was first man off in the Hastings club promotion and got round in a creditable 29min 13sec. Less fortunate in 13th starting position was Frank McCloud. He hit the deck on a greasy corner and lost further time with an unshipped chain to finish in 27:15. Chris Kitchenham produced another amazing ride to finish as first junior and overall winner in 24:14. Suffering sore legs from this ride. Chris was second junior in Sunday’s 25mile time trial at Uckfield, clocking 1hr 2min 54sec. Triathlete Paul Panagi scored a personal best 1:4:30 while Peter Baker finished in 1:8:26 Event: |

Cycling: A team of four from Hastings and St Leonards Cycling Club rode in the VC Elan third category and juniors 46 mile road race at Mereworth, near Maidstone on Sunday. The unexpectedly large 90 man field produced a few hazards on this hard rolling circuit. A crash after 18 miles brought down 11 riders, including Mark Knowles, but he eventually rejoined the bunch despite a buckled rear wheel. He chased and out sprinted mot of the small breakaway group to finish third overall. Team mates John Sharples, Frank McCloud and Paul Panagi finished with the main field. Event: |

Knowles stays upright A team of six from Hastings and St Leonards Cycling Club competed in the Kent League two day event at the weekend. Sixty riders set off on Sunday afternoon to cover the 86k first road race stage based around Benenden in Kent. The cold wet and windy conditions were to take their toll leaving just 24 finishers, including five of the Hastings men. Mark Knowles finished highest in seventh place, followed by John Sharples ninth, Frank McCleod 12th, Chris Kitchenham 21st and Paul Panagi 22nd. Both Chris and Paul were suffering chest infections and colds. The following morning a 16k time trial was held at Frant where the intrepid five’s placings were reshuffled with Mark Knowles fifth, Chris Kitchenham ninth, Frank McCleod 13th, John Sharples 15th and Paul Panagi 18th. With tired legs, 21 riders set off on the afternoon’s 100k final road race stage around Frant and Wadhurst. Tandem pair’s success Hastings and St Leonards Cycling Club’s Peter Baker and Keith Evans finished in the top five of the Tandem Club 25 mile championships at Cambridge on Sunday. The flat exposed course stopped the 90 strong field putting in fast times with the Hastings’ duo finishing in 57min10sec. The Hastings junior road racing squad have had some success in the recent Lewes Wanderers CC circuit race series held at Laughton on Thursdays. The event is hotly contested by a number of Sussex clubs up to 50 riders have been competing each week. Trickey circuit Mark Knowles and John Sharples represented Hastings and St Leonards Cycling Club in the Bexleyheath town centre criterium at the weekend. An early crash on the tricky circuit split the 35 strong bunch in two and after a furious chase Mark joined the group. John was caught in the second chasing group who were eliminated when lapped. Tandem Record Peter Baker and Keith Evans have been in record breaking form over the last fortnight. The Hastings and St Leonards Cycling Club tandem broke the club record by 1min 40 sec in the Southend and County Wheelers time trial by recording 20min54sec for ten miles. On Sunday favourable conditions saw them set another club best by completing the Essex Roads 25 mile time trial at Witham in 52min 27sec to finish fifth overall. Fellow club rider Chris Kitchenham did not enjoy such good weather when he took 59mins to finish a 25 mile event in Bedfordshire. Event: |
