The time trial season is now well on its way and some of the events may seem a long way back. It is not my intention to go over the programme week by week as many accounts naturally duplicate in other notes. The KCA 50 was held in blustery and showery weather. Roy Manser won in 2-6-6. Bob French got going very well and should have been somewhere near this time. He unfortuately punctured and sufferred a delay of 9 minutes finishing in 2-18-58. Martin Chambers recorded 2-18-29. Seven members entered the ESCA 25 held in June. Martin Chambers was best and recorded 1-4-29. He was eight fastest. One of our regular supporters in the all round sense, Brian Kent from London, did a personal best tricycle ride of 1-9-39. Jack Southerden was amongst members who turned out to ride in the Sussex Senior road race championships. Unfortunately non managed to finish the event. An excellent photo of Jack in uncharachteristic style appeared in the local paper by way of compensation. On the same week end Maurice Carpenter partnered by John Mansell (Worhting Excelsior) rode the tandem trike in the Colchester Tandem 30. Their time was 1-12-36. It was a wonderful morning for the club Open 50. Hazy with a soft breeze. 95 entries were received from a wide area, establishing this event as a popular fixture in the South. With all racing members on the start sheet, and many on holiday, marshalling was far from easy. Dennis Neeves found the stregth and stamina for the push off. I should like to mention that in addition to a mountain of other work, Fred Martin, our President motored 300 miles to make the event possible. Guy Little has requested that green sponges be barred in future. From remarks afterwards it appears that everything went well for the competitiors. All six ladies faced the starter. They were not so lucky as the wind increased later on, but they plugged unfalingly. Bob French was in good form and triumphed in 2-3-23. R Gardiner (Folkestone) and J Clements (Letchworth Velo) were second and third respectively. Pam Wells won the ladies in 2-24-47 with Jean Baker (San Fairy Ann) and Iris Stevens (Eastbourne) second and third. Brian Kent (Mephisto) won the trike secion. Veteran Ted Coussens turned up and road in his usual steady style. As he rode to the event it was quite a tidy mileage for the morning. After the event the sky clouded and the wind increased. The left over marshalls were robbed of the much anticpated kip on Little Stone Beach. Instead we had a chilly and fitful snooze on some forlorn grass verge. Tea at Stone was enjoyed before the weary ending to a succesful day. Our Presidets’ birthday run was belssed with the usual fne weather as on previous occasions. Whether the dates come from Old Moore’s Almanack or not they are always right. As befitting the title this was a leisurly run. Elevenses were at Chitcombe. Just past Robertsbridge we bumped into a crowd of some 50 ramblers. Lunch was al fresco at Burwash. As the pub was near the recreation ground we were able to take our drinks over and watch the local cricket match. When they adjourned for lunch the midday break was rounded of by a snooze in the hot sunshine. Tea was originally arranged for the “Abbey Hotel” Battle, but they could not take us on this occasion. “The Star” bang opposite was fortunatley able to take us at a moments notice. It was a fine tea and not since pre war have I seen so much on the table. Although we had several young people at the tea, some was left over. Many thanks, Fred from all for an excellent day. In Battle ramblers were as thick as flies. Just like the 1930’s. Life goes on. The evening 10’s have been well supported. Rye with Jim Holland at the head have provided fine support throughout. Bob French has done some 23m. odd at times. The juniors who turn up everytime must be mentioned. Peter Miles has proved fastest so far. The experimental photographic evening last year proved a success. By popular request another evening on a bigger scale is planned for this year. It will be held at the “Abbey Hotel”, Battle on the 25th October commencing 4-30 p.m. Tickets including buffett tea 5/6. Those who would like to compete are invited to submit not more than 4 half plate prints mounted on card with a one inch border. Anyone may also submit 4 colour slides of 35 mm size only. 7/08/1880 Hastings Times 125	… The next race was the race of the day, and consisted of a three miles bicycle handicap, run in two heats. Considerable excitement was manifest in both races. The racing was exceedingly good. THREE MILES LOCAL HANDICAP BICYCLE RACE. First prize to the value of £5; second. £3; third £2. First Heat F W Beck, 175 yards start 1 W Davis, 200 ditto 2 A L Lovett, 180 ditto This was a closely-contested race, some splendid form being shown by several of the riders. F W Beck passed into first place, beating H Davis, who was second. A L Lovett, who was third, rode in capital style. E C Gilbert, scratch, also showed some fine form, but the task imposed upon him was too much, he failing to take a place. Second Heat. C Shortell, 300 yrads start 1 A W Chesterfield 100 ditto 2 F Amon 250 ditto 3 Only three of eight competitors turned up in this race. A good start was effected. Chesterfield soon passed Amon and rapidly gained on Shortell, but the distance was too short to overhaul him. Chesterfield, therefore, took second place. Final Heat, F W Beck, 175 yards start (£5) 1 C Shortell, 300 ditto (£3) 2 A T Lovett, 100 ditto (£2) 3 H Davis, 200 ditto F Amon, 250 ditto A Chesterfield, 100 ditto A very good start was made, all the competitors getting of well together. F Beck passed Shortell, Davis, and Amon, and took first place. Lovett, who rode exceedingly well, succeeded in getting into third place. Shortell kept his in the second position throughout the race. Chesterfield also rode well. The race occupied 10min 23sec. This concluded the sports… Event:
11/07/1991 Belper News 98	…In the Woodbank Trophy Road Race near Buxton, a circuit taking in Axe Edge and Hitter Hill… On the same course, covered four times for 66 miles, the National Junior Road Race Championship started immediately after the Woodbank Trophy race. Belper BC’s Darren Perry and Michael Curtis rode but found the going tough with heavy showers and a 100 rider field. The latter proving dangerous on the fast descent from the top of Axe Edge… Event:
14/10/1876 Hastings Observer 1	A bicycle Club – At a meeting held at the Swan Hotel on Thursday evening, a bicycle club was formed for Hastings and St Leonards, and the officers of the committee appointed. Mr F Garrett is the captain of the club. We understand that several members have already joined, and we wish the club every success.
17/07/1880 Hastings Observer 120	A Hastings Bicyclist at Maidstone. —Mr. E. C. Gilbert, captain of the Hastings St. Leonards Bicycle Club, was second in the one mile open handicap race, and third the two mile race at the annual bicycle race meeting arranged by the Kentish clubs, which took place at Maidstone on Saturday last, in unpropitious weather. Considering the character of the meeting, Mr. Gilbert may be warmly congratulated on his success. Event:
28/08/1880 Hastings Observer 115	A Notice to bicyclists. The Hastings Bicycle Club have (by permission of the County Surveyor) erected in a conspicuous position at the White Hart Hill, Guestling, a notice stating that the hill is dangerous to bicyclists.
6/07/1878 Hastings Observer 15	Accident to the Captain of the Bicycle Club.—Last (Friday) evening, between seven and eight o'clock, Mr. Gilbert, the captain of the Hastings Bicycle Club, was riding down High-street, and when nearly opposite the Swan Hotel, he accidentally fell of his machine and struck his head on the edge of tile kerb. He was at once picked and assisted into the hotel, where he was seen by Dr Ashenden, who found that he had fortunately received no serious injury, though was very much shaken and his face was cut in several places.
24/07/1880 Hastings Observer 121	ANNUAL BICYCLE RACE MEETING The annual race meeting in connection with the Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle Club, which was postponed from July 7th, in consequence of the wet weather, came off under much more favourable circumstances on Wednesday afternoon last, in the Central Cricket and Recreation Ground. The various events were witnessed by a considerable number spectators, and … … The ground, although rain had fallen heavily during the preceding night and early morning, was pronounced to be in excellent condition for riding. The arrangements were under the immediate supervision of the energetic Hon. Secretary, Mr F Amon, and well he performed his arduous task. Tents for the accommodation of members, and a large canvas enclosure for spectators, had been erected on the ground, and placards on the canvas announced ”No betting allowed."" In the absence of Mr O R Travers, Mr C H Gausden acted as judge, and in the absence of Mr R E Quick, Mr J W Tutt acted as starter. The competitions commenced a few minutes after three o'clock, and did not terminate until nearly nine. The following were the results: ONE MILE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RACE. First prize, value £2 10s, presented by Mr G B Gaitskell; second prize, value £1 1s, presented Mr S Chester; third prize, value 10s 6d, presented by Mr F W Beck. There were three heats in this race, the results being as follows: First Heat A W Chesterfield, 1st; T. C Becton, 2nd; A E Shortell, 3rd. Second Heat F W Beck, 1st; E C Gilbert, 2nd; T Lovett, 3rd. Final Heat Beck, 1st; Gilbert, 2nd; Chesterfield, 3rd; Becton, 4th; Lovett, 5th; Shortel, 6th. This race was naturally regarded as a test one, the riders all starting at scratch point. Beck, who showed some splendid riding - a vast improvement of his last exhibition in the ground – led round the first corner, but was soon passed by Chesterfield, whose form of riding was much admired. Gilbert, having distanced Beckton, was third in order, and at times somewhat closely pressed the second man. Beck, however, put on spurt, which Chesterfield could not resist, and again headed the run. Gilbert also succeeded in passing Chesterfield, who was clear would not be able to recover his position. Towards the close there was a struggle between Beck and Gilbert, but the latter was not equal to the task, and Beck ran in at the head with good lead. PLANK RACE. The competitor who rides the longest distance to compete in the final heat. First prize value £1 1s, presented by Sir Ughtred Kay-Shuttleworth Bart, President; second prize, value 10s 6d. There were five heats, the successful competitors being - First heat A W Chesterfield; second heat A T Lovett; third heat W Beck; fourth heat J N Seward. Final heat A T Lovett, 1st; A W Chesterfield 2nd. This race did not excite great deal interest, although it required deal of skill proceed far on the planks. TWO MILE MOUNTING ND DISMOUNTING RACE First prize, value £3 3s. (£2 2s presented by Mr F A Inderwick QC MP Vice President, £1 1s added); second prize, value £1 10s; third prize value 10s 6d presented by Mrs Story. First heat - A W Chesterfield 1st; A E Shortell, 2nd; A T Ellerbeck 3rd. Second Heat – A T Lovett, 1st; H Davis, 2nd. Final Heat – A W Chesterfield 1st; H Davis 2nd; A T Lovett, 3rd. This race was one of the most amusing. The strenuous efforts of some of the competitors to mount their machines quickly causing roars of laughter. One or two, also, were placed hors de combat. FIVE MILE HANDICAP First prize, value £3 3s (£1 is presented by Mr C J Murray, MP, Vice President with £2 2s added); second prize, value £1 10s presented by Mr J Davis; third prize 10s 6d presented by Mr F Amon. First Heat E C Gilbert (scratch), 1st; F W Beck (225 yards) 2nd; C. Shortell (300 yards), 3rd. Second Heat - A. W. Chesterfield (100 yards ), 1st; H Chester (225 yards), 2nd; T C Beckton (150 yards) 3rd. Final Heat – Beck, 1st; Gilbert 2nd; Shortell, 3rd. - In the final heat, Gilbert rode exceedingly well, but was unable to overtake Beck, who won a splendid race by about 50 yards ; indifferent third. ONE MILE CONSOLATION First prize, value £1, presented by Mr Otho R. Travers, Vice-President; second prize, value 10s 6d, presented by Mr E C Gilbert Captain; third prize value 10s 6d presented by Mr A W Chesterfield, sub-Captain. Open to members riding in two of the previous races and not gaining a prize. There were six competitors in this. race, the result being as follows: 1st A J Ellebeck; 2nd T C Beckton; 3rd A E Shortell. This brought the programme to a close, and the Club may be congratulated upon a successful meeting. Event:
21/08/1976 Hastings Observer 47	Best Hastings time in the East Sussex Cycling Association's 100-mile time trial was recorded by P. Baker [Peter Baker] in 4hr 47min 08sec. The winner was D. Hook (Folkestone) in 4hr 47mins Riding for Hastings in the Southborough Evening 10 was M. Carpenter [Maurice Carpenter], who recorded 24min 10sec and his two sons, Steve [Stephen Carpenter](25min 45sec) and Tim [Tim Carpenter] (27min 16sec). All were personal best times. Tomorrow's club run will start after the Eastbourne Rovers 25 from Iron Pear Tree Corner. Event:
13/10/1877 Hastings Observer 11	Bicycle Club.—The annual meeting of the members of the Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle Club was held at the headquarters, at the Swan Hotel, on Thursday evening. There was a good attendance. The following were re-elected without opposition—Mr A J Lovett, vice president; Edward C Gilbert, captain; S Philcox, sub-captain; W Carswell, hon. secretary; A J White, treasurer. The following business was also transacted: —The machines kept for the use of learners were ordered to repaired; fresh rules were directed to be printed; and the usual weekly runs arranged. The books, which had been previously audited, showed a substantial balance in hand. The proceedings terminated with vote of thanks to the Chairman for the great interest he had taken the club since its formation.
10/08/1878 Hastings Times 16	Central Cricket Ground -. Notwithstanding the counteracting influence of other attractions on Monday last, the annual Pedestrian Fete at the Central Cricket Ground was well attended, there being about 2,500 people present during the afternoon. The weather was all that could be desired, the only fault being that it was a little to warm between three and four o'clock... Two Miles Handicap Amateur Bicycle Race - 1st prize value £7 7s; and value £3 3s; 3rd vaue £1 0s; 4th value £1 - H Joy St Leonards (350 yards start), 1: J T East, Surry RC (scratch) 2: H Hart Eastbourne BC (200 yards) 3: T A Denne East Kent BC (400 yards): H Croucher, East Kent BC (320 yards) 0, T C Berrington Dulwich (250 yards) 0. The races were hardly concluded and the rain here began to fall, and the ground was rapidly deserted. The promoters of the fete are to he congratulated upon the order and decorum apparent, and upon the success of their efforts to provide recreation and amusement for the people. Event:
14/07/1951 Hastings Observer 113	CENTRAL GROUND SPORTS DESPITE the bad turn which the weather did for the cycling and athletic sports, held at the Central Ground under the auspices of the Hastings Warrior Cycling Club Thursday night, all the events went off to schedule. The wet ground naturally affected the times, and number Intending competitors scratched, but notwithstanding this about 100 young athletes took part, coming from as far afield as London, Brighton and Maidstone. Ivan Buckland [Ivan Buckland (Hastings Warrior CC)], of the Warriors Cycling Club, again showed himself to be a champion in the making when he won three the four cycling events in which he was entered. His track craft was outstanding, and he fully deserved the cheers received when he sped home to victory in the 880 yds. N.C.U. championships (Sussex Centre), the E.S.C.A. 1,000 yds. championship -—both which he has held for three years—and the 880 yds. handicap. … Special mention must made of the excellent organisation of the sports, which, under the leadership of Mr G W. Jenkins [George Jenkins], went off smoothly from start to finish. The Carnival Queen distributed the prizes. 6/09/1930 Hastings Observer 110	Club Notes During last weekend the open 25 miles road event promoted by the Hastings Club was decided under good conditions. B Bevan, of the Highgate CC gained a well merited success in achieving the fastest time. In doing so he improved on last year’s winning time to the extent of 96 seconds and brought the course record down by 39 seconds. S E Maplesden of the Eastbourne C and AC, scored a popular win in annexing the first handicap award. In connection with this , it is interesting to note that by reason of handicap allowances, 10 competitors were brough within 1½ minutes of Maplesden. This indicates the judgement with which the handicaps were awarded. In the race for the team honours (aggregate of the the three fastest men of one club), a fine struggle ensued, in which only 10 seconds covered the first three clubs. The following gives the chief results: 1st fastest B Bevan (Highgate CC), 1hr 5mins 10secs: 2nd fastest, E L Parsonson (Clapham CC), 1hr 7 mins 1sec: 3rd fastest H A Longley (Brighton Stanley) and G W Stanford (San Fairy Ann CC) 1hr 7mins 13secs. 1st handicap S E Maplesden (Eastbourne) 5 ¾ mins, 1hr 3mins 9secs; 2nd handicap G W Stanford (San Fairy Ann) 4 mins 1hr 3mins 13 secs; 3rd handicap R Westgate (Brighton Ex) [Brighton Excel], 6½ 1hr 4mins 26secs; 4th handicap, G Sinden (Hastings) 7mins, 1hr 4mins 28secs; 1st team San Fairy Ann (Maidstone), 3hrs 28mins 31secs; 2nd team, Clapham CC, 3hrs 26mins 37secs; 3rd team, Brighton Stanley, 3hrs 26mins 41secs. Mr Harvey Smith (the club’s chairman) was timekeeper for the event assisted by F L March [Frederick March]. The timekeeping at the halfway stage was accomplished by Mr A I Balchin, with Mr F Rix acting as pivot for the riders’ turning. The thanks of the club are due to Messers. Jenkins, Tester, Bliss, Mabb and Emary for marshalling the course. As referee, Sir Charles Kirkpatrick maintained a keen and interested watch over the whole activities. The organisation of the event was in the hands of Mr F C Gasson (hon. Secretary). This weekend the club will be represented by J F Mackie, A Helliwell, R Harmer and C W Sinden in the 12 hours road event promoted by the Southern Counties Cycling Union. Event:
23/08/1941 Hastings Observer 68	Crack Cyclist Death of Mr 'Jimmy' Moren Mr. James ('Jimmy') Moren [James Moren], one of Hastings crack cyclists at the end of the last century, died at the Royal East Sussex Hospital on Saturday [15 August 1941], at the age of 76. Brought up in the grocery business. he worked for his father in Bohemia Road after leaving school. He then changed his occupation, and his exceptional interest In cycle racing coincided with his employment with Mr. George Jenkins in his cycle business. Later he returned to his old trade and opened grocery business in Southwater road where he remained for very many years. As a racing cyclist. Mr Moren made his bow to the public In 1884 at Bank Holiday athletics meeting at the Central Ground at Hastings. where mounted on a 52 inch ordinary he gained first place In an open race. A year later he created something of sensation locally initiating the '100 miles road record.' He accomplished the 100 miles in the then phenomenal time of 11 hours 47 minutes, and for this feat the Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle and Tricycle Club, of which he was a member, presented him with a silver medal. The 100 miles record became very popular with local cyclists, but Mr Moren monopolised the honours until 1892, in which year he covered the distance In 7 hours 3 minutes. During his career Mr. Moren frequently rode up the Castle Hill, and was the first to attempt the slope from Wellington-Square to the West Hill to the terminus the lift. In 1899, when he was honoured with the captaincy of the local Cycling Club, he was described 'the most brilliant handicap rider In Hastings.' His speciality was long distance riding, and on several occasions he won the Mastin Challenge Cup—of which he became permanent holder—starting from scratch and conceding starts up to 450 yards. Up to 1900 Mr. Moren had competed in over 300 races, and won 107 prizes. He was connected with the local Cycling Club for many years, and was one of its oldest members, if not the oldest. He frequently arranged dances in aid the club, and was himself a keen dancer. As a member of the local volunteer force of cyclists he rode at the great Military Exhibition held at Chelsea. The race was open to all England and only missed being first in the final by inches. The 62 competitors included the leading cycling stars of the Kingdom. In addition to cycling, Mr Moren was very fond of sea and river fishing, and was also a keen gardener. He was a member of the Bohemia Conservative Club for many years. On retiring from business. Mr Moren and his daughter went to live at 97 Battle Road, St. Leonards. The funeral took place on Thursday at the Borough Cemetery, the Rev. John Daniel, minister of Chapel Park Road Baptist Church, St. Leonards, officiating. The immediate mourners were Miss W. Moren (daughter). Mr. and Mrs. Hodges. Mrs. Upton, Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Brooker, Miss Wallis, Mrs. Dann. Mrs. Busbridge. Miss Hewlett. Mr. Baker; Mrs. Mlddleton (friends). Floral tributes were received as follows: —Wreath. 13/01/1940 Hastings Observer 62	Cycling The mystery run, led by Mr G Cotton, last Sunday was fairly well attended. Leaving via London-road and Silverhill, rough going was encountered through Silverhlll Park, Old Roar and Grange-road, and the riders then proceeded past Hurst Court, down Chown's Hill towards Three Oaks, then on to Westfield and through lanes to Sedlescombe, bearing left to Pay Gate Cottage, and then up Marley lane to Battle, The main road was followed via Kitchenham lane to Penshurst and the lunch destination, Ashburnham. Here the Eastbourne Club [Eastbourne Rovers CC] were met and, after various games, the Hastings party made for Woods Corner and Rushlake Green, the main road being followed to Herstmonceux, then left to Wartling and Pevensey, and over the old main road to Barnhorn and Little Common, continuing up Belle Hill to Bexhill and home to tea. To-morrow's run to Matfield. Assemble 9am at the Royal Oak. leaving 9.15 sharp. All members are asked to attend in view pleasant surprise.

29/06/1940 Hastings Observer 83	Cycling Carries on One of the few sports which has not been affected greatly by the new regulations is cycling. Mr A Rome, the secretary of the local club, tells me that they are going ahead with their weekend tours as usual although the closing of a number of roads in Kent has forced them to revise some of their runs. The same remarks apply to the local section of the Cyclists' Touring Club.

26/04/1991 Hastings Observer 107	Cycling: Sunshine and sleet showers brought mixed fortunes to members of Hastings and St Leonards Cycling Club at the weekend. Early starters in Saturday afternoon’s East Sussex CA 10 mile time trial at Whitesmith suffered the wort of the heavy sleet. Clive Piper, 14, was first man off in the Hastings club promotion and got round in a creditable 29min 13sec. Less fortunate in 13th starting position was Frank McCloud. He hit the deck on a greasy corner and lost further time with an unshipped chain to finish in 27:15. Chris Kitchenham produced another amazing ride to finish as first junior and overall winner in 24:14. Suffering sore legs from this ride. Chris was second junior in Sunday’s 25mile time trial at Uckfield, clocking 1hr 2min 54sec. Triathlete Paul Panagi scored a personal best 1:4:30 while Peter Baker finished in 1:8:26 Event:
16/11/1940 Hastings Observer 88	Death of Mr Julius Mastin ... In his earlier days Mastin was ardent cyclist and was for some time captain of the old Hastings Cycling Club. One of his most treasured possessions was a stationery cabinet, presented him by the club on the occasion of his marriage. Incidentally, Mr. Mastin was one of the last people in the district to relinquish the old 'pennyfarthing' machines. Following his cycling career, Mr. Mastin was one of the pioneers of motoring the town,
5/04/1991 Hastings Observer 100	Following a winter of long training miles in harsh conditions, Hastings and St Leonards Cycling Club members are beginning to stretch their legs with some early season racing. Several have been active in the Surrey and Kent road racing league series with John Willis, Frank Mcleod and Paul Panagi contesting the 3rd and 2/3rd category events. Young Chris Kitchenham, now in junior ranks after three successive years as a schoolboy, looks to be starting the season on a high note. Following his ninth place in the Sussex CA 25 mile time trial at Arundel earlier this month, he astounded fellow club members with a scorching 22 min 19 sec ride in the Elite CC 10 mile promotion at Brentwood on Saturday. In a class field featuring some of the south’s top riders, Chris swept to the 4.99 miles turn in less than 10 minutes, while averaging speeds in excess of 35 mph. On the return leg to the finish with the last half mile on tricky and narrow Essex lanes, he was hampered by a rising chill northerly wind which reduced his speed to just under the 25 mph barrier. Beaten into second junior position by a mere 15 seconds, Chris took consolation in the knowledge that his real speed training has not yet started. Event:
13/07/1957 Hastings Observer 112	Four Trials M Carpenter [Maurice Carpenter] on Sunday became the first member of the Hastings and St Leonards Cycling and Athletic club since 1931 to compete in the North Road CC. Memorial 50 mile trial, which has now became an invitation event for fast tricyclists, and he was placed sixth with a time of 2hr 22min 33sec. The winner was G Clayton, Spartan Wheelers, who did 2hr 15min 19sec. Once an invitation event to the best 12 riders in the country, the trial was won by G W Jenkins [George Jenkins] of the Hastings Club in 1929 and 1930. Other trials supported by members on Sunday were the Appollo CC women’s 25 miles and KCA ”100” [Kent CA]. There was a club run to Yalding and tea was at Beckley. The club’s second evening trial over 25 miles was held in conjunction with the Rye club [Rye Wheelers] last week and best times were made by J Southerden [Jack Southerden] 1:10:23; B Dean [Bernard Deane (Rye Wheelers)], who did 1:11:55 with a puncture delay; and J Holland [Jim Hollands], 1:11:56. 17/01/1880 Hastings Observer 89	Funeral of Bicyclist On Wednesday last the mortal remains of Mr. Charles Davis, eldest son of Mr. J. Davis, of Grand Parade, were conveyed to their last resting place the Borough Cemetery. Deceased was a member of the Hastings Bicycle Club, and several the members attended the funeral. Amongst them were Mr A T Lovett (Vice-President), Mr E Gilbert (Captain), Mr Chesterfield (Sub-Captain), Mr Palmer (Bugler), Mr F Amon (Secretary), Mr A J Lovett, Mr Chester, Mr. Styles, Mr. S. S. Thompson, Mr. E. Thompson, Mr. Hinton, Mr. Beckton, Mr. Beck, Mr. R Parker, &c. All the members wore their uniforms.
7/06/1991 Hastings Observer 114	Gruelling bike race Five members of Hastings Cycling Cub competed near Chichester on Saturday in the Sussex divisional road race championships. The Hastings lads did well with Frank McLeod seventh and Paul Panagi eight in the seniors after a gruelling 90 miles. Juniors Mark Knowles and Chris Kitchenham made sure they covered every breakaway. The tough uphill finish proved too much for some when a trio of riders locked handlebars and hit the deck. Mark and Chris escaped the carnage to cross the line in second and fifth places. Mark repeated his second place in the previous weekend’s Kent League road race where the club’s position was consolidated by John Sharples taking the bunch sprint for third position. Chris Kitchenham scored yet another personal best and the first club rider ever to go inside 21 minutes for ten miles. His 28½ mph ride in the Hainault Road Club event at Shenfield, Essex placed him eight overall and first junior in a field of 120 competitors. 4/10/1879 Hastings Observer 61	Hastings & St Leonards Bicycle Club The annual meeting of the members of this Club was held at the Head-quarters, the Seaside and Pier Hotel, Thursday evening, Mr. A J Lovett being in the chair. There was a large number of members present. The Secretary's statement showed the Club to be a complete success in every way. The following officers were elected :—President, Sir. U J Kay-Shuttleworth, Bart., M.P. ; Vice-presidents, Messrs. A J Lovett, and O R Travers; Captain, Mr. E C Gilbert; Subcaptain, Mr. A Chesterfield; Hon. Secretary, Mr. F Amon; Treasurer, Mr. A J White; Bugler, Mr. C A Palmer. There were three retiring members on the Committee—Messrs. C Davis, Beckton, and Sims—and these offered themselves for re-election. Messrs. J Tutt, H F Style, and C Wellerd, were also proposed, and on a ballot being taken, the successful candidates were Messrs. C Davis, H F Styles, and J Tutt. Mr. E C Gilbert (Captain), referring to the general state the said he was very pleased to say the Club runs for the last quarter had been well attended. Two or three them, however had had be abandoned on account of the bad weather, but the whole, they were more successful than the previous quarter. Messrs. Sparks and Wollvin were elected members. It was decided that the whole of the members meet at head-quarters every Thursday, at 8.30, during the winter months. The revision of the rules was left to the Committee. It was announced during the meeting that the annual dinner would be held in November. A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the proceedings.
14/07/1877 Hastings Observer 7	Hastings and Leonards Bicycle Club.—A quarterly meeting of the above club was held at the Swan Hotel on Thursday evening last, when there was good attendance of members, the captain, Mr E C Gilbert, occupying the chair. The resignation of the sub-captain, Mr T Butchers, was accepted with regret, and Mr S Philcox was unanimously elected to fill the poet. The captain and other members decided to attend Sussex Bicycle Association meeting, to be held Brighton August 18th, to represent the club. Several new members were enrolled - Meets for general runs are held at the Swan Hotel, Highstreet, on every Wednesday, at seven o'clock.
5/10/1878 Hastings Times 18	Hastings and St Leonards Bicycle Club. The quarterly meeting of the above Club was held on Thursday evening at the Seaside and Pier Hotel, under the presidency of A J Lovett Esq. A good number of members were present. The Chairman first of all called upon the Secretary (Mr William Carsell) to read the report, the substance of which was follows: Financial report for the half year April 4 to October 3. 1878. £  s  d Balance brought forward 4  8  0 Receipts 3  7  6      Total 7 15  6 Expenditure 1  5  0 Balance in hand 6 10  6      Total 7 15  6 The report showed that 11 members had joined during the half-year, and one resigned, the present number being 31. The CHAIRMAN, in thanking the secretary for his report, said he had one little thing to mention, for which he was extremely sorry, and that was that their captain (Mr Edward G Gilbert), who had given the club so much attention, had had the misfortune of meeting with an accident, which would incapacitate him from riding for some time. He wished to thank him for the manner in which he had attended to the various meetings of the club. The CAPTAIN thanked Mr. Lovett for letting them have his name upon their club programmes, and for his attention with which he had favoured them. He proposed that gentlemen should continue his office as vice president of the club. He would be unable to hold the captaincy for some time, owing to his recent accident, as be would not be able to ride for some two or three months; however, he hoped some day to be able to ride again, end moved that the captaincy should be left open for a month. The CHAIRMAN thought it would be better to leave it open for three months, when he hoped Mr. Gilbert would be restored, or that be should continue or that he should continue his office during the three months. The CAPTAIN absolutely agreed to remain in office until the next meeting. SUB-CAPTAIN. Respecting the election of sub-captain, it was agreed that that office should be raced for. SECRETARY. Mr William Carswell was re-elected secretary of the club, and presented with the thanks of the members, for the efficient manner in which he had discharged his duties. TREASURER. Mr Alfred J White was re-elected treasurer of the club. COMMITTEE. The following is the result of the balloting for the three members who should act on the committee of the club: Messers Wellerd 7 [votes], Stills 7, Cutting 6, Haman 4, Veness 4, Packton 4 and Simkins 4. A RACE FOR AN OFFICE. The Captain proposed that Mr Stile should preside over the run to be held on Wednesday, the 16th last, at four o'clock, for the sub-captaincy, the riders to meet at Carlisle Parade, after which the members and friends should meet for a social meeting at the Seaside and Pier Hotel, at half past eight o’clock. [see 19 October 1878 report] PRIZES. It was agreed that the sub-captain should be presented with a bicycle bugle, and that a second prize be offered to the second rider, of a bicycle lamp and bells. CLUB MEETINGS. The social meetings of the club were proposed to be held every Thursday at the Hotel, at half-past eight o'clock, for the members and friends of the club. The third Thursday in the month however was to be reserved for the business meetings.

9/10/1880 Hastings Observer 127	HASTINGS AND ST. LEONARDS BICYCLE CLUB. The half-yearly meeting of the members of this Club, was held at the Seaside Hotel, on Thursday evening. Sixteen members were present, and Mr Gilbert occupied the chair. OFFICERS. The resignation of Mr E C Gilbert, who bas been Captain since the formation of the Club, was received and accepted, and Messrs. A W Chesterfield and H Davis unanimously elected Captain and Sub-Captain respectively. A hearty vote of thanks to Mr Gilbert for past services, was proposed by Mr J Lewns, and carried amid loud applause. ATTENDANCE PRIZE. The prize value £1 1s, for best attendance at Club runs during the season, was awarded to Mr A T Lovett. A VOTE OF THANKS To the Chairman, brought the proceedings to close. THE REPORT Bears date October 4th, and the Committee state therein that the Club runs during the past season have been successful and enjoyable and well attended, consequent upon an increased number of riders. The prize, value £1 1s., for best attendance, will be shortly presented. Through the liberality of the President, Vice-Presidents, and friends of the members, the Committee were enabled to offer good prizes, which resulted in our having a successful Race Meeting, the expenses of which exceeded £31, but in consequence of a postponement on account of the weather being necessary, the receipts did not reach that sum which your Committee expected from the character of the programme. Members of the Club have competed open races, and have been successful in taking some the best prizes. Some extended tours have also been taken, Yorkshire, Cambridgeshire, Warwickshire, etc., having been visited. In accordance with the new rule passed at the last half-yearly meeting, electing the officers and committee of the Club for one year, the same members retain office during the next half-year. The financial statement, in connection with the annual race meeting sheet, shows a loss of £4 12s 11d, the donations amounting to £15 9s ?d; the sum realized at the race meeting being £11 9s 2d. The expenditure set down at £31 10s. 7d., including the sum of £18 1s laid out in prizes. The balance-sheet shows a surplus to the good of £7 6s 1d.
9/10/1880 Hastings Times 128	HASTINGS AND ST.LEONARDS BICYCLE CLUB.—The half-yearly meeting of the Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle Club was held on Thursday evening at the Seaside Hotel. The chair was occupied by Mr C Gilbert, [E C Gilbert] and there was a good attendance of members. Mr. Gilbert, who has held the office of captain of the club since its formation, tendered his resignation, which was accepted. After a short dissuasion, Mr A W Chesterfield was elected captain, and Mr H Davis was appointed to the post of sub captain. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Gilbert his past services. A prize, valued £1 1s, for the best attendance at the club runs during the season, was awarded to Mr A T Lovett. The financial statement is very satisfactory, showing a balance in hand of £7 6s 1d.
9/03/1940 Hastings Observer 70	Hastings Club Notes Last Sunday's run took members through Rye and Reading Street to lunch at Kenardington. Afterwards they wet on to Ashford via Kingsnorth, the main road being followed to Willesborough and lanes through Mersham, Bilsington, and Ham Street to Snargate. Tea was taken at Stone-in-Oxney. Tomorrow (Sunday) riders leave the Royal Oak at 9 am for Henfield. Tea arrangements are in hand.
24/02/1940 Hastings Observer 65	Hastings Club Notes The mystery run led by Mr J Southerden [Jack Southerden] will leave the Royal Oak at 9 am tomorrow (Sunday). In its place last Sunday club riders had a run to Laughton via Sidley, Ninfield, Herstmonceux and Horsebridge. Lunch was taken at Laughton and the way then led to Ripe, Berwick and Polegate returning over Pevensey Marsh to Barnhorn, Little Common and Bexhill and then home by way of Silverhill. Members should note that prizes won last season will be presented next Saturday night at 7 o'clock by Mr Harry Smith in the club room at Calvert Road. The subscription has been halved for the duration of the war. This includes NCU third party insurance.
8/06/1940 Hastings Observer 79	Hastings Club Notes The run last Sunday was again well supported. Leaving via the Front, the route lay through Sidley and Herstmonceux to Horsebridge for a brief halt afterwards forward to East Hoathly and Uckfield, through the Forest road to Nutley and Wych Cross. From there, Forest Row and East Grinstead were made in good time, and the riders went on to Godstone for lunch via Felbridge and Blindley Heath. After traveling via Edenbridge to Ashhurst and Langton and the outskirts of Tunbridge Wells, Lamberhurst was reached by way of Bayham Abbey, and tea was taken at Swiftsden. An easy run home via Hurst Green completed an enjoyable 100 miles. For this weekend the club have two sections, one riding through the night for Rushden and Northampton, and the Sunday section leaving the Royal Oak for Chichester at 5am. Tea at Brighton at 5pm. Wednesday's social run to Rye and Northiam starts at 7pm sharp
27/07/1940 Hastings Observer 84	Hastings Club Notes The run last Sunday was enjoyed by all who took part. Leaving by way of the arterial road, the riders went via Battle, Netherfield, and Brightling to the lunch destination at Burwash. Lane riding was continued to Ticehurst Road, Mayfield, Tidebrook, Durgate and Lamberhurst, through Bedgebury Park to Hartley for tea. The homeward journey was via Benenden, Sandhurst, Staplecross, Sedlescombe and Baldslow. Tomorrow (Sunday) riders leave the Royal Oak at 9am for a interclub run with the Medway Wheelers. 29/06/1940 Hastings Observer 82	Hastings Club Notes The run last Sunday was enjoyed by all. The route was from the Frant to Ninfield, Herstmonceux and Horsebridge for a brief halt, afterwards forward to Laughton and through lanes to Isfield. Owing to tyre trouble lunch was taken at Piltdown and the riders had to return via Maresfield, Uckfield, and East Hoathly to tea at Upper Dicker. Home was reached via Horsebridge and Ninfield. The Wednesday evening run was Shorncilffe. Tomorrow (Sunday) riders meet at Christ Church, Ore, at 7am for Yalding and district. Tea at Swiftsden, 5pm.
1/06/1940 Hastings Observer 78	Hastings Club Notes The run to Chiddingstone on Sunday was again well attended. Recently two attempts were made on the Eastbourne and back record as follows: Tandem by messers P Bliss [Percy Bliss] and S Powell [Sid Powell], which failed by 8 secs, their time being 1hr 28mins 8secs, against the record of 1hr 8mins [This was a standard time]. Solo attempt by Nr J Lynch, who failed by over 4mins, his time being 1hr 39mins 15secs, the record standing at 1hr 35mins. Both attempts were timed by Mr H Smith, and turned at Eastbourne by Mr G Prince. Other club members assisted at various points. Tomorrow a run to Reigate and district leaves the Royal Oak at 8am. Tea at Swiftsden 5pm. Will all members please note that runs are social and not training spins. The speed is moderate and all arrangements are in capable and experienced hands. Event:
17/02/1940 Hastings Observer 64	Hastings Club Notes The run to Leeds Castle and district was well attended. Leaving via Ore the riders reached Rye in good time, and the way then led through Playden, Iden, Wittersham, Tenterden and Biddenden to Headcorn for lunch. After travelling via Sutton Valence and Langley cross roads, they reached Leeds Village and Castle, and rode on through Harrietsham, Lenham, and Charing bearing right via Pluckley to Bethersden and High Halden. Tea was taken at Tenterden, the return journey being via Rolvenden, Northiam and Sedlescombe. Home was reached in good time after a trip of over 80 miles. Tomorrow (Sunday) Mr J S Southerden's [Jack Southerden] mystery run leaves the Royal Oak at 9 am. All tea arrangements are in his hands.

The places visited included Tilbury, Chelmsford, Colchester, Bushden, Bedford and To-morrow (Sunday) a run to the Kent coast leaves Christ Church, Ore, 7 am. Tea arrangements are hand.
17/07/1976 Hastings Observer 44	Hastings Cycling CIub man of the moment Peter Baker was back in action last weekend after his record breaking 25-mile ride in 58 minutes 59 seconds the previous week. In the San Fairy Anne 50 at Brenzett, his time 2hrs 10mins 31secs, with Jack Southerden recording 2hrs 31mins 10secs. The last four Wednesday evening 10's at Broad Oak will start at 7.15. Event:
21/02/1976 Hastings Observer 32	Hastings Cycling Club attended the East Sussex Cycling Association's [East Sussex CA] supper and presentations at Framfield on Saturday. On Sunday, the run was to Buxted returning through Lewes. The club juniors went on a training ride to Maidstone.
10/04/1976 Hastings Observer 37	Hastings Cycling Club members J. Southerden [Jack Southerden] and P Baker [Peter Baker] recorded a time of 1hr 16min 38sec in the East Sussex CC Two Up team time trial of 29 miles on Sunday. The winning time was 1hr 9min 38sec by C. Sharp [Cliff Sharp (Eastbourne Rovers CC)] and K. Stephens (Eastbourne Rovers) [Ken Stevens (Eastbourne Rovers CC)]. Tomorrow, the Eastbourne Rovers' 24-mile circuit will start at 9am from Pevensey. 28/02/1976 Hastings Observer 33	Hastings members of the Cyclist's Touring Club attended the meeting of the East Sussex DA at Horam on Sunday. Tomorrow's run will start from the Briers (8 am) for the first of the 10 mile time trials.
10/07/1976 Hastings Observer 43	Hastings rider P. Baker [Peter Baker] beat the cycling club's 11- year-old record for 25 miles by 1min 37sec on Saturday. In establishing the new time of 58min 59sec, he became the first Hastings rider to complete the distance in under an hour. Baker's triumph came in the Woolwich CC time trial, held on the A2 from Cobham. The event was won by the new national 25-mile champion, A. Engers in 51min 10sec. Baker was also in action in the Eastbourne Rovers 10, recording a time of 24min 53sec. M. Carpenter [Maurice Carpenter] recorded 26min 40sec and J. Southerden [Jack Southerden] 29min 32sec. Mrs A. Morris [Audrey Morris] and D. Morris [Dave Morris], who are also Members of the Rough Stuff Fellowship, led a run on the South Down way on Sunday. 10/05/1991 Hastings Observer 106	Knowles stays upright A team of six from Hastings and St Leonards Cycling Club competed in the Kent League two day event at the weekend. Sixty riders set off on Sunday afternoon to cover the 86k first road race stage based around Benenden in Kent. The cold wet and windy conditions were to take their toll leaving just 24 finishers, including five of the hastings men. Mark Knowles finished highest in seventh place, followed by John Sharples ninth, Frank McCleod 12th, Chris Kitchenham 21st and Paul Panagi 22nd. Both Chris and Paul were suffering chest infections and colds. The following morning a 16k time trial was held at Frant where the intrepid five’s placings were reshuffled with Mark Knowles fifth, Chris Kitchenham ninth, Frank McCleod 13th, John Sharples 15th and Paul Panagi 18th. With tired legs, 21 riders set off on the afternoon’s 100k final road race stage around Frant and Wadhurst. All five club members finished with these overall positions: 5 Mark Knowles, 10 John Sharples, 12 Frank McCleod, 15 Chris Kitchenham, 16 Paul Panagi. Event:
22/06/1940 Hastings Observer 81	Local Club Notes The run to Kent last Sunday started by way of Westfield and Northiam on to Rolvenden and Tenterden where, after a brief halt the riders proceeded to Biddenden and Headcorn. Leaving the main road for lane riding to Grafty Green and Lenham, they reach the lunch destination at Staliafield, afterwards continuing through lanes to Throwley, and eventually arriving at Sheldwich and the main road to Ashford. The tea destination was reached via Kingsnorth, Orlestone and Warehorne and the return run was via Wittersham, Underhill, Playden, Rye and Icklesham. Tomorrow (Sunday) riders leave the Royal Oak at 7.30pm for Midhurst. Tea arrangements are in hand.
15/06/1940 Hastings Observer 80	Local Club Notes The run to Rushden and district was carried out without incident. Leaving after lunch on Saturday, the riders reached their destination via London, Bedford and Milton Ernest, covering a distance of 133 miles, in ten hours, which included all stops for refreshment. Sunday's run to Bognor and Chichester was also carried out satisfactorily. After breakfast Brighton, the coast road was followed via Worthing and Littlehampton to Bognor. Chichester was reached in time visit the cathedral and afterwards riders went forward to Arundel for lunch. The route then lay over undulating country to Crossbush, Broadwater and the Old Shoreham road to Brighton. After tea at Lewes, they had an easy run home via Ringmer, Horsebridge and Ninfield. Hastings was reached 8 pm and the mileage was over 150. Wednesday's social run is to Barnhorn and Hooe, leaving at 7 pm. To-morrow (Sunday) riders meet Christ Church, Ore, at 7am for a tour of Kent: tea at Stone 5 pm.
11/05/1940 Hastings Observer 76	Local Club Notes The run last week took riders via Rye to Marden for lunch. Afterwards they travelled through lanes to Broughton Monchelsea to Sutton Valence crossing the main road to Pluckley and on to Hothfield Common and Ashford for tea. Tomorrow's Whitsun tour to Eastern Counties start from Christ Church, Ore at 5 am with breakfast at Maidstone at 7.30am Attempts were made on the Eastbourne and back record of 1hr 35mins with the following results: E Swanton 1hr 35mins 25secs: D Lowe 1hr 43mins 35secs: W Baker 1hr 48mins 20secs. F Lelyveld also rode in the recent 50 miles TT. His time being 2hrs 30mins 40secs. The winner was A Rose in 2hrs 17mins 34secs. Event:
23/03/1940 Hastings Observer 71	Local Club Notes The run to Wateringbury was again well attended. Leaving by way of Harrow Hill, the main road was followed to Roberstbrdge, Flimwell and Lamberhurst. Lane riding brought the party to Horsmonden and Yalding, and they continued over the Pack Horse bridge to Wateringbury. Lunch was taken at Aylsford and afterwards they went on to Key Street and Bearsted. Here, owing to chain trouble, they had to make for Langley via Leeds village continuing to Sutton Valence and Headcorn to tea at Tenterden. The homeward run was via Witersham and Rye to Iclesham and Ore. Yesterday (Good Friday) members left Halton Church at 4 am for Salisbury, on the club's Somerset and Devon tour.

1/05/1976 Hastings Observer 39	Making a comeback after a long lay-off, Hastings Cycling Club's M Carpenter [Maurice Carpenter] won the 10-mile event at Broad Oak in 29 mins 35 secs. The Cycling club are hoping for an increase in membership following statistics just published by the Department of Environment showing an increase of 13 per cent in pedal cycle traffic. Event:
10/08/1957 Hastings Observer 118	Mixed Grill Hastings and St Leonards Cycling and Athletic Club activities over the holiday weekend included touring, the Sunday run, and racing on road and track. M Carpenter [Maurice Carpenter] did a very good ride in the Tricycle Association national 50 mile trial to take third place, with a time of 2hr 18min 26 sec. A week earlier he did an exceptionally fast time of 2hrs 15mins 26sec in the Dartmoor RC Open ”50”, held on a Devon course to win the handicap and improve his club tricycle record by more than four minutes. The cub was also represented in the Dragon RC women’s 100 miles trial, held on the Bath Road; the Medway Wheelers’ 50 miles rial; and events at the Rye Sports on Monday. Members on the Sunday run to West Sussex covered more than 100 miles having lunch at Shermansbury and tea at Buxted. A club ”25” last week was won by B Dean [B Deane (Rye Wheelers)] of the Rye Club, in 1hr 7min 36sec. J Hollands [Jum Hollands] was next in 1hr 9min 38sec: and A Huggett was third in 1hr 10min 55sec. 19/10/1878 Hastings Times 21	Mr H F Style, after a closely contested race of about one mile and-a-half won the sub-captaincy of the Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle Club on Wednesday, Mr Arthur Lovett [A Lovett] being two yards behind, and Mr Becton a good third. In the evening about 18 members partook of an excellent supper at the Sea Side Hotel, when Mr Style was presented with the first ???? a bicycle bugle, the second prise being a bicycle lamp and bells, and the third a silver flask. 19/10/1990 Hastings Observer 117	Pedal ups and downs Triumphs and disappointment were charted by members of the Hastings and St Leonards Cycling Club at the weekend. Of the three teams of pairs riding the Wessex VTTA team time trial at Ringwood in Hampshire, Mark Knowles, 16 aided by veteran partner Derek Addrison recorded a scorching 59min 2sec to score 11th position in the 49 team field. Meanwhile John Willis and Pete Campany clocked a creditable 1hr 1min 55sec. The third club team to start would have been juvenile club star Chris Kitchenham and veteran Keith Evans but a puncture during their pre-race warm up prevented then from even reaching the timekeeper Event:
9/08/1879 Hastings Times 59	Pedestrian Fete Cycle Results … Two Mile Handicap Bicycle Race. 1st prize, a silver cup, value £7 7s; 2nd a gold medal, value £3 3s; 3rd, a silver medal value at £1 15s. The race was in two heats, the two first in each heat to go in the final. Is the first heat, J R Hamilton, Druids' Bicycle Club, who started at scratch, gradually passed his four opponents, and came in first. A J Lovett, Hastings Bicycle Club, 150 yards start, being a good second. Great excitement prevailed when Lovett, who is a little fellow, hard pressed the winner during the latter part of the race. In the second heat E Gilbert, Hastings Bicycle Club,100 yards start, was first, winning easily, and H Stiles, Hastings Bicycle Club, 160 yards start second. G Hilton, of Hastings, gave up towards the end of the race. The final was a most interesting struggle between the four. Gilbert soon passed Stiles and Lovett, but was eventually overtaken by Hamilton, who won by about half-a-dozen yards, amidst much cheering. Gilbert being second. A struggle for the third took place between Stiles and Lovett, who were riding abreast until nearing the goal, when the latter put on a spurt and won by three or four yards. Event:
10/08/1878 Hastings Observer 17	Pedestrian Fete. The annual grand Pedestrian Fete was held the Central Cricket and Recreation Ground, and was witnessed by between 3,000 and 4,000 spectators. The programme comprised three handicaps, also two miles handicap bicycle race, and in most of the heats of the several events there were some exciting contests. Mr S Watling, formerly of Hastings, but now of Brighton, was manager, and was ably assisted by Mr Shaw, who officiated as starter, Mr G F Finn, of Canterbury, handicapper, Mr H Cheal, referee, Mr. Develin, and a committee composed of local gentlemen... Two Miles Bicycle Race.—First prize, silver cup value seven guineas; 2nd, silver cup value three guineas; 3rd, silver medal with gold centre 4th, silver medal. This was rode in two heats. In the first, J T East Surrey BC, who started at scratch, won after a splendid race; H Hart, Eastbourne, 200 yards start, being second; and H. Croucher, East Kent Invicta B.C., 320 yards, third. In the second heat, H Joy, St. Leonards, 250 yards, was first T A Denne, East Kent Invicta BC, 400 yards, second; and T C Berrington, 250 yards, third. The first two in each heat rode in the final, Joy being the winner, with East second, Hart third, and Denne fourth. Denne, a young lad, was loudly cheered during, the race for the plucky way in which he rode, and Mr. Develin on handing him the fourth prize complimented him on his riding. Event:

14/08/1976 Hastings Observer 46	Rising cycling star Eighteen - year - old Peter Baker (above) has leapt to fame in only his first year as a senior member of the Hastings and St Leonards Cycling Club. His most dramatic feat was the breaking of the club's 11 year-old record for 25 miles by over a minute to become the first Hastings rider to complete the distance in under an hour. 30/05/1959 Hastings Observer 111	Spartans in Championships In the Sussex road race championships on Sunday Bernard Dean [Bernard Dean (Spartan CRC)] as best of the Spartan Club entrants riding into sixth place. The only other club rider to finish was Roy Hillman [Roy Hillman (Spartan CRC)], who rode very steadily to finish 10th. The race, which was run in hot windy conditions, was won by W Lievesley (Southern Coureurs). Of the other members, two retired with punctures and one with an attack of cramp. The Thursday evening race was postponed because of a thunderstorm and will be run later. Tomorrow (Sunday) a club team will be riding in the Eastbourne Rovers’ road race over eight laps of a Ninfield, Ashburnham, Boreham Street circuit, starting at Boreham Street at noon. Event:
28/06/1991 Hastings Observer 103	Tandem pair’s success Hastings and St Leonards Cycling Club’s Peter Baker and Keith Evans finished in the top five of the Tandem Club 25 mile championships at Cambridge on Sunday. The flat exposed course stopped the 90 strong field putting in fast times with the Hastings’ duo finishing in 57min10sec. The Hastings junior road racing squad have had some success in the recent Lewes Wanderers CC circuit race series held at Laughton on Thursdays. The event is hotly contested by a number of Sussex clubs up to 50 riders have been competing each week. Mark Knowles, John Sharples and Chris Kitchenham all finished the three races well up the field with Mark winning the second. Event:
4/10/1991 Hastings Observer 104	Tandem Record Peter Baker and Keith Evans have been in record breaking form over the last fortnight. The Hastings and St Leonards Cycling Club tandem broke the club record by 1min 40 sec in the Southend and County Wheelers time trial by recording 20min54sec for ten miles. On Sunday favourable conditions saw them set another club best by completing the Essex Roads 25 mile time trial at Witham in 52min 27sec to finish fifth overall. Fellow club rider Chris Kitchenham did not enjoy such good weather when he took 59mins to finish a 25 mile event in Bedfordshire. Event:
7/09/1957 Hastings Observer 119	TEAM SUCCESS In the East Sussex Cycling Association 50mile trial on Sunday, Hastings and St Leonards Cycling and Athletic Club enjoyed Its first team success since the 1955 season. Only three members rode, but each did his best time of the year at the distance, and their aggregate time was about 3½ minutes better than that of the Southborough club's team, who were next among the nine competing clubs. A Moorhouse [Tony Moorhouse] was fourth fastest in 2hr 12min 36sec; M. Carpenter [Maurice Carpenter] did 2hr 13min 22sec; and J. Southerden [Jack Southerden] 2hr. 16min 58sec. The winner was K Griffiths, the Uckfield Club’s fast veteran, who did 2hr 9min 11sec. In the women's section E. Rolleston [Esther Rolleston] did 2hr 35mln. 10sec. The Sunday run went out Chalvlngton for lunch, and tea was Hawkhurst. Some fast times have been returned in the club's recent 10-mile trials, and last week's event two were inside 25 minutes, with A. Moorhouse first in 24min 50sec; and M Carpenter second In 24min 59sec. Tomorrow's run will leave from the King’s Head, Ore at 6 am. Tea will be at Beckley. Event:
23/02/1878 Hastings Observer 12	The Bicycle Club. The annual dinner in connection the Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle Club, which is now in a more flourishing state than it has been since its formation, took place at the Swan Hotel on Wednesday evening, when about twenty sat down to a most sumptuous spread, served up in Host Collins's well-known style. The chair was occupied by Mr A J Lovett, vice-president of the Club, and the vice-chair by Mr E C Gilbert, captain; and there were also present, Mr C B Gaitakell, Mr T Gilbert, Mr French (captain of the Maidstone Bicycle Club), Mr Butchers, Mr White (treasurer), Mr T Ainsworth, Mr F Ellis, Mr J Stace, Mr Carswell (secretary), Mr Sims, Mr Reed, Mr Philcox (sub-captain) Mr Crissford, Mr Wellerd, Mr Veness and Mr A Lovett jun. The cloth having been cleared, those present having 'charged' their glasses, The Chairman gave the health of 'The Queen, and the rest of the Royal Family' which was drunk with enthusiasm. Mr E C Gilbert next gave the toast of 'The Army, Navy, and Volunteers'. The former were too well known to them to need any remarks on their behalf from him. Of the volunteers he could only say that they had two or three corps in the town, and he thought they were as good as any throughout the kingdom. (hear hear.) He coupled with the toast the name of Mr. George Hutchings. Mr Hutchings in response, said he was not at the present time a member of the rifle corps, but be had served his three years, which he thought every young man ought to do, and he then left on the condition that he was to join again if he was ever wanted by Captain Cooper. In conclusion, he thought that the honour of England would be best served by the maintenance of peace. Mr. Butchers proposed the next toast, and he supposed that why he had to do so was in consequence of his leaving the town, and of his being about the only member present of the original club. The toast he was sure they would drink a most cordial manner. It was 'Success to the Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle Club,' coupled with the name of Mr A J Lovett, the Vice-President. When the club was started, they first met at Miss Garrett's rooms in Castle-road, and they had been established but a very few weeks when they were introduced to Mr Lovett. That gentleman had been a kind help to them since that time through many difficulties, and the club would not be in the flourishing state it then was if it had not been for him (Mr. Lovett). He had also supplied them with a bicycle for learning, and introduced a new member in his son, who, though the youngest, was the pluckiest and best rider they had in the club. He (the speaker) himself thanked the Vice President personally for the business like manner in which he had carried out the duties of his office. He had known Mr. Lovett out of doors as a gentleman, and indoors as a thorough business man. He had much pleasure in proposing the toast. Mr Lovett returned them his sincere thanks for the kind manner in which they had drunk his health, and also Mr. Butchers for the way in which he had spoken of him. With reference to the club itself, they could take a very cheerful view of the case. He saw around him all the faces that he had the pleasure of seeing last year, and believed that they were steadily increasing in numbers. They had several very good riders, some were coming on, and he thought they would come on very well indeed. The had had some talk of challenging other clubs, and trying to win prizes; if not that, to give some away, they had such a good sum in hand. Last year they had a substantial balance in hand, but this year there was a still larger one. If 'they went on in the future as they had done in the past they were sure to succeed. He again thanked them for the kind manner in which, they had received the toast. The Chairman said he had to propose a toast was sure they would all drink with pleasure, and it was really the most important one of the evening —""The health of the Captain, Mr E Gilbert."" (Applause.) He had all the drudgery to do, to pick out the muddy parts of the road, and to keep the recruits away from them. He was a kind of monthly nurse. He encouraged alI those that could ride, and tried to make those ride who could not do so; and the least they could do was to drink to his good hearth. Mr Gilbert, in response, said he in no way deserved the praise their- Vice-Presidet had given him; he could not say much with regard to the club after that gentleman's speech. He (the speaker) would always do his best carry out the duties, and he hoped they would have many pleasant runs during the year. He again thanked them, and said it would be his pleasure to do his best for the club—which he hoped would prosper in every way. The Chairman gave "" The sub Captain, Mr S Philcox."" That gentleman always made himself agreeable, and kept the young recruits from, looking too much after the girls. (Laughter.) He did not know what they should do without him, as he was very useful as well as ornamental. Mr Philcox, in responding, said that if the club needed his assistance at any time he should be most happy to give it. The little he had done for the club had been done most willingly. He thanked them most heartily for the manner in which they bad drunk his health. Mr C Wellerd gave ""The health of the Secretary, Mr. Carswell,"" and in doing so said be was glad that they had chosen that gentleman for their secretary, he was all that could be desired, and had done all he could for the benefit of the club. Mr Carswell returned them his most hearty, thanks. They were a young club, and it was rather difficult to establish one of that kind, the sport not being so popular as many others. He trusted they would all do their best, and work together to keep the club established. They were in a flourishing condition, and as regarded the funds, they had a satisfactory balance. Mr S Philcox proposed ""The Health of the Treasurer.' Mr White responded in humorous speech. Mr E Gilbert then gave ""Other Clubs,"" coupled with the name of Mr. French, Captain of the Maidstone Club. Mr. French thanked them for the hearty manner which they had received the toast. He was happy to say that thought bicycling was on the increase. With reference to his own club, he was sure they would be pleased to meet them at any time, and the Maidstone Club wished their Hastings brethren every success. Mr White gave ""the Visitors,"" coupled with the name of Mr T Gilbert. Mr. Gilbeert thanked them for coupling his name with the toast, and assured them that he was very pleased to meet them there. He was happy to hear that the club was in such prosperous state, and he trusted to see them going on improving. The remaining toasts were ""The Ladies,"" proposed by Mr Reed and responded to by Mr. Gaitskell; ""The Press,"" proposed by the Chairman and responded to Mr Hutchings ; "" Mr. French, the Pianist; and ""The Host and Hostess."" There was some excellent singing during the evening by Mr T Ainsworth, Mr Crisford. Mr C Wellerd, Mr T Gilbert, Mr E C Gilbert, Mr Carswell, etc.
19/10/1878 Hastings Observer 20	The Bicycle Club.—After a closely-contested race of about a mile-and-a-half, on Wednesday, Mr H F Style won the sub-captaincy of the Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle Club, Mr Arthur Lovett [A Lovett]being two yards behind, and Mr T Beckton a bad third. In the evening a supper was held at the Seaside Hotel, the headquarters of the club, when Mr. Style was presented with the first prize, a silver bugle, the second prize being a bicycle lamp and bells, and the third a silver flask. 14/04/1877 Hastings Observer 6	The Bicycle Club.—The half-yearly meeting of the Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle Club was held at the Swan Hotel on Thursday evening. Mr A J Lovett was elected vice-president; Mr E C Gilbert, captain ; Mr. T Butcher, sub captain; Mr W Carswell, secretary; whilst Mr. A J White was re-elected treasurer. The rules were revised, and the future meetings will be held at the Swan Hotel the first Thursday in every month, at 8 o'clock p.m. The club is in a flourishing state, there being a good balance in hand.
22/05/1880 Hastings Observer 93	The Cricket Ground Pedestrian Fete. The Grand Pedestrian Fete, organised by the Amalgamated Friendly Societies of Hastings, in the Cricket Ground on Monday and Tuesday, attracted large numbers of spectators, on the former day especially, when the sports were witnessed by some 4,000 people… Two Mile Amateur Bicycle Race - First prize, a silver cup, value £7 7s.; 2nd, a gold medal, value £3 3s.; 3rd, a silver medal, value £1 10s. For this race there were nine entries, divided into two heats. In the first heat the five competitors entered started, four of the riders being members of the Hastings Bicycle Club. 1 T Woolven, who had 260 yards start, was never overtaken, and won; 2 A J Lovett, with 200 yards start being 2nd; 3 G S Row, Hornsey BC the scratch man, 3rd; and 4 W Chesterfield 4th. 5 T Ellerback, 300 yards start, gave up on being passed by Woolven. In the second heat three of those entered started, the absentee being H H Arnold, of Hastings, who had 150 yards start 1 E C Gilbert, Hastings, 100 yards start, passed the winning post first; 2 M Pritchard, Druids BC, 25 yards, being 2nd; and 3 F Beck, Hastings, 300 yards, 3rd. It may be added that the latter competitor was very much out of form through recent indisposition. The final, which was run later on in the evening, was the most attractive feature of the programme, the two first each heat contesting, and the race was watched with a deal of interest. It was Woolven's first appearance at a racing meeting and, therefore, his qualities were not known; but his riding in the first heat was remarkably good, and it was predicted that he stood a good chance for the first or, at least second place in the final. Gilbert's riding was pretty well known as well that of Lovett, and it was naturally anticipated that the scratch man knew his way round. Woolven had a start of 260 yards, and he was followed by Lovett, Gilbert having 100 yards start of the scratch man. Lovett lost ground, and Gilbert passed in somewhat early part of the race. The scratch man, whose ""form"" was much admired, gradually drew towards his opponents, and having passed Lovett, reached Gilbert, and, with a fine spurt, slipped into the second place. Woolven had, throughout the race, carefully preserved his lead, riding in first rate form for a novice. Although the scratch man began to warm up, it was thought impossible that he could seize the lead, and at the close of the race 1 Woolven still unpassed, 2 Pritchard was second, and 3 Gilbert third. 4 [Lovett] Event:
5/04/1879 Hastings Observer 22	THE HASTINGS AND ST. LEONARDS BICYCLE CLUB, HALF-YEARLY MEETING. The half-yearly meeting of the members of the Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle Club was held at the Seaside Hotel on Thursday evening, the chair being occupied Mr. Lovett. There were also present Mr E Gilbert, Captain; Mr Styles, Sub-Captain; Mr F Amon, Secretary; Mr White, Treasurer; and Messrs. A Lovett, jun., G Hutchings, Palmer, McCormick, Beckton, E Timewell, Sparks, Weller, Simms, Akers, Hinton, Veness, and Reed. The minutes the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The report, which was as follows, was read and adopted : 'The Committee present to the members their annual report and balance-sheet, from which it will be seen that the Club prospering in satisfactory manner, both financially and as regards an increased number of members. The Club runs for the past season, although enjoyable and successful, were not numerous. This was, no doubt, owing, in measure, to the inclemency of the weather. During the past quarter nine members have been elected, and one only (in consequence of leaving Hastings) had left the Club. The Committee particularly desire that members will endeavour to ' turn out' in satisfactory numbers for the weekly runs during the approaching season, which will be posted on the notice-beard in the usual way. The balance-sheet showed that after paying all expenses there would be £2 1s 6d. in hand. The receipts amounted to £8 16s.' The next business was the election of officers. Mr. E Gilbert said he had been trying to persuade Mr. A Lovett, sen. [A J Lovett], to act as president of the Club, but he had not succeeded in doing so. He therefore moved that Mr Lovett and Mr O Travers should be elected Vice-Presidents, the higher office being left vacant. Mr Amon seconded, and the motion was carried. Mr. Lovett said he would always be happy to be of any assistance to them, and he had no doubt he might say the same for Mr Travers. The following officers were also elected: Captain, Mr E Gilbert; Sub-Captain, Mr Styles; Bugler, Mr Palmer; Secretary, Mr. Frederick Amon; Treasurer, Mr. White. It was proposed that the sub-captaincy should be raced for, but the motion was lost. The following gentlemen were elected as committee, together with the officers the Club: — Mr G Hutchings, Mr Simms, and Mr T Beckton. ""Success to the Club Runs"" was then enthusiastically drank, after which some discussion ensued with reference to a list road-rules, etc, which had been drawn up by the Captain and Sub-Captain. These were of a most useful character and were eventually adopted. The opening run of the Club was announced to take place on Wednesday next, at four o'clock, the journey being to Robertsbridge and back. The organisation a race meeting in connection with the Club was left the hands of the Committee. 6/04/1878 Hastings Observer 13	The Hastings and St. Leonards Bicycle Club. Half-yearly meeting. The half-yearly meeting of the Hastings and St Leonards Bicycle Club was held, at the club-room, Swan Hotel, on Thursday evening, when the chair was occupied by the Vice President, Mr. A. J. Lovett: and amongst those present were Mr T Gilbert (Captain), Mr A J White (Treasurer), Mr W Carswell (Secretary), Mr Smith, Mr Reed, Mr A Sims, Mr A Lovett, jun., and Mr T Stace. The Chairman called upon the Secretary to give them short statement to hew they stood. The Secretary said that at the last half-yearly meeting they had a balance in hand of £3 8s. 6d. The members' subscriptions since that time had amounted to £3 10s., making total of £6 18s 6d. After all expenses had been paid, there would be balance hand of £4 8s. There were eighteen subscribing members and eight honorary members at present. Four new members where then proposed, and the two representatives of the local press present (the Observer and Chronicle) were made free members. The election of officials was then proceeded with, as follows:-Vice-President, Mr A J Lovett; Captain, Mr E C Gilbert; Sub-Captain, Mr S Philcox; Treasurer, Mr A J White; Secretary, Mr W Carswell; Committee (in addition to officers of the club), Mr C Wellerd, Mr A Sims, and Mr W Cutting. The rules of the club wen then gone through, and several alterations made. It was also decided to have regulations for riding, the first- and most important being that each member should have a bell affixed to his machine when riding in the evening after dusk, when he was travelling through crowded thoroughfares. The others were principally instructions as to the orders of the Captain and Sub-Captain. The removal of the head quarters to a more central position of the borough was next taken into consideration. Mr E C Gilbert said he had seen Mr Donald, of the Seaside Hotel, who had stated that he should be happy to place a room at the disposal of the club. The position would be a more central one, and more convenient to the members. He moved that the head-quarters be removed to the Seaside Hotel. . In answer to one of the members, Mr Gilbert said the terms would be the same as they had the present room on. Mr Sims seconded the motion, which was carried. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings. There will be a meet of the club on Good Friday, when the members will ride to Hawkhurst where they will be met by the Maidstone Club.
9/08/1879 Hastings Observer 60	The Pedestrian Fete The Annual Grand Pedestrian Fete took place in the Central Cricket and Recreation Ground on Bank Holiday. There was large attendance, as many as 5,000 people being present. The events consisted of four handicap races and a two-mile Amateur Bicycle Race. The entries to the races were exceedingly large, and the good number that came to scratch reflected great credit on the the Handicapper, Mr. H Cheal, who was also referee. Mr. S White acted as starter. The refreshments were supplied by Mr. Maplesden, of the Anchor Inn… Two Mile Handicap Bicycle Race.—1st prize, a Silver Cup, value £7 7s. ; 2nd, a Gold Medal, value £3 3s.; 3rd, a Silver Medal, value £1 15s. The race was in two heats, the first two in each heat to go in the final. In the first heat, J. R. Hamilton, Druids' Bicycle Club, who started at scratch, gradually passed his four opponents, and came in first, A J Lovett, Hastings Bicycle Club, 150 yds. start, being a good second. Great excitement prevailed when Lovett, who is a little fellow, hard pressed the winner during the latter part the race. In the second heat, E C Gilbert, Hastings Bicycle Club, 100 yds. start, was first, winning easily, and H Stiles, Hastings Bicycle Club, 160 yds. start, second. G Hilton, of Hastings, gave towards the close the race. The final was most interesting struggle between the four. Gilbert soon passed Stiles and Lovett, but was eventually overtaken by Hamilton, who won by about half-a-dozen yards, amidst much cheering, Gilbert being second. A fine struggle for the third prize took place between Stiles and Lovett, who were riding abreast until nearing the goal, when the latter put on won by three four yards. The races concluded, the rowdy element introduced itself, and free tights were the order of the day, one individual, who assaulted a police-constable, being conveyed to the lock-up.
11/08/1877 Hastings Observer 10	The Pedestrian Fete [6 August 1977], which has now become an annual event, took place, as usual, in the Central Cricket and Recreation Ground, where a large concourse of spectators assembled to witness the running. The entries were numerous, and some of the races were a most exciting character. One of the chief features of the programme was the bicycle race, which was watched with great interest, and which fully justified the anticipations of the spectators that it would afford good sport. The weather could not possibly have been finer, and everything passed off most successfully. During the afternoon the band, of the Hastings Rifle Volunteers was in attendance, and performed excellent programme of music. , Mr. G P Finn was handicap per, usual, with Mr F W Nichols as starter, and Mr H Cheal a referee. The general arrangements were ably carried out Mr S Watling. The following were the results of the various races: [...] Two Miles handicap Amateur Bicycle Race – 1st prize, silver cup, value seven guineas. 2nd, silver cup, value three guineas; 3rd, silver medal with gold centre; 4th, a silver medal: in two heats : ten times round the course. Five started in the first heat. 1st. C Fitzgerald. Ashford (220 yards); 2nd, C W Nicholas, Brighton Bicycle Club (160 yards). Second heat: five started. A most exciting race for first position took between G Kent Tunbridge Wells (200 yards), and F East, Surrey Bicycle Club (15O yards), each taking alternate positions amidst the greatest excitement, the former winning by about three feet. H Hart, of Eastbourne Bicycle Club, who rode well, was a good third. The first two in the heats competed in the final, which was a very close contested race. Kent, who came first in the last heat, soon dropped to the rear, virtually leaving the race to the other three, who kept close together during the last few laps. East was the favourite, but at the last he was obliged to give way a little to his two opponents, who put it on in gallant style. All three came in at the last very close together to tremendous shouts of applause, and the greatest excitement and enthusiasm, as follows :—C Fitzgerald (Ashford), 1st; C W Nicholas (Pickwick Bicycle Club). 2nd; F East (Surrey), 3rd and G Kent [Tunbridge Wells] 4th.
19/04/1879 Hastings Observer 23	THE PEDESTRIAN FETE IN THE CRICKET GROUND. A pedestrian fete was held in the Central Cricket and Recreation Ground in the afternoon of Monday [14 April 1879], but owing, no doubt, to the dampness of the ground and the threatening aspect of the weather, the spectators were not nearly numerous as on previous similar occasions. The several events on the programme were carried out under the management of Mr S Watling, of Brighton, Mr. G F Finn officiating as handicapper and referee, and Mr H Cheal as starter. The band of the Hastings Rifle Corps was engaged, and played selections during the afternoon. Mr H Love, of the Pilot Inn, supplied the refreshments. The results of the racing were follows : ... Two Miles Handicap Amateur Bicycle Race. —This race was restricted to members of the Hastings Bicycle Club only. There were eight entries, and it was run in two heats. In the first Lovett [A Lovett jun], 20 yards start, won and Gilbert, scratch, was second. In the second, Philcox, 10 yards start, was first; and Styles, scratch, second. The final heat was won by Lovett, Philcox being second, and Gilbert, third. Lovett, a young lad, rode remarkably well, and succeeded in overlapping his opponents, and passing them in splendid style, amidst loud applause from the spectators. ... Event:
27/04/1878 Hastings Observer 14	The Pedestrian Fete. The annual Grand Pedestrian Fete was held in Central Cricket and Recreation Ground on Monday last, when about 3000 spectators assembled in the ground to witness the running, while large numbers gathered on the outside, especially in Portland-place. The ground, owing the recent falls of rain, was very heavy, and not all favourable for the running, but notwithstanding this, the competitions were in some cases very close, and of most exciting nature. A great attraction in the proceedings was the two miles handicap amateur bicycle race, for which there were ten entries. This event was watched with great interest, and throughout the race loud cheering was heard from all sides the competitors passed. During the afternoon military band was in attendance, and performed several selections of music. The general arrangements were ably carried out by Mr S Watling, while Mr H Cheal officiated as starter, and Mr G F Finn as referee. The refreshment stalls were under the management of Mr H Love, of the Pilot Inn. The fallowing are the results of the various races: ... Two Miles Handicap Amateur Bicycle Race. First prize, a silver cup, value seven guineas; second a silver cup value three guineas; third, silver medal with gold centre; fourth, a silver medal. In two heats. The first two in each heat to compete in the final . The winners of the heats were - in the first, C Fitzgerald Ashford (220 yards start), and J Horn, Lombard BC (300 yards); in the second, E Runtz, Pickwick BC (200 yards), and H P C. Hare, Tunbridge Wells (230 yards). The racing in both heats was very exciting, and a good speed was maintained throughout, in spite of the unfavourable nature of the ground. The final heat resulted as follows: 1st E Runts; 2nd, J Hord; 3rd C Fitzgerald; 4th H P C Hore. The prizes were presented to the successful competitors by Mr. H Devlin at the finish of each race.
21/10/1876 Hastings Observer 2	The third meeting of the Members of the above Club will be held at the Swan Hotel on Thursday evening next at 8 o’clock. Gentlemen wishing to join , must send in notice to the Secretary, at the Swan Hotel. A Bicycle kept for the use of members learning to ride.
11/11/1876 Hastings Observer 3	The twenty-five miles championship of the world in bicycling was won at Brighton on Monday by J Keen, the 50 mile champion of England. D Stanton (the 100 mile champion) and C Thuillet (French Champion) also competed.
7/08/1880 Hastings Observer 126	Upwards of dozen mounted their ”iron steeds’ in a three mile local handicap bicycle race. This was the great event of the day, and the first prize of £5 was taken by F W Beck, who was an easy winner; the second prize of £3 falling to A E Shortell, and the third of £2 to A L Lovett [A T Lovett]. Beck covered the distance in 10min 32 secs. Event:
