Added Updates Page

I have now added an Updates/News page which will clean up the front page and maintain a record of what has been going on.

Database Update

I need to amend the underlying structure of the database to make the updating, search function and data validation more effective. When I started out I had no idea that the archive would be quite so large and this makes cross checking all the data complicated.

The only problem with this is that it may have some unintended consequences - a minor change this morning crashed the results page and any other pages linked to the results data. I hope I have fixed it but let me know if you spot any oddities - basically if a page fails to load.

1981 Information

I have now completed the upload of the 1981 information from the first of four folders (8/8/2024). If you notice any oddities please let me know

14 August Club event results and pictures

I have now added the results for the club event on 14 August 2024 and a picture of Justine Kelly who has just recently started racing

Web site and Data Update

I have just finished cleansing the Archive Data and also rebuilding the web pages to improve the functionality.

I will update the data and load the new pages over the next few days. You may notice a few "oddities" as the system settles down but hopefully the archive will be more useful as a result of the work.

Tonight (20/9/2024) I am uploading a clean set of data to the archive as well as a complete set of web pages for both the desktop and mobile device sites.

Web site Page and Data Update #2

I have uploaded all the new pages and all the archive data (20:30 20/9/2024).

There is a problem with the mobile device redirect. This should be fixed. If the page looks weird then just reload, or navigate to another page.

I have fixed the initial problem with the sorting on the TT and Road Racing/Grass Track pages.

Web site Page and Data Update #3

I am back to just adding data, and minor tidying.

Over the last few weeks I have scanned and uploaded a pile of result and start sheets for 1978 and 1979 from one binder and this has added over 300 results. It has also filled in a few blanks.

I am now working through another binder of general correspondence. This has corrected a few records. There is an interesting note from Jack Southerden of his times and gearing for the Wallingford Lane hill climbs from 1950 to 1963.

More Photographs

Paul Wright has kindly sent me 44 images of the club racing in various events between 1990s and 2000s. I am slowly processing them.


I am researching the photographs to find events etc so for example I have extracted the newspaper articles from 1991 to link to photograph of Mark Knowles in the 1991 National Junior Road Race

More Photographs, Results and Newspaper Articles Added

I have uploaded the first photographs from Peter Wright of Lee Holdaway, Jonathan Molton and Peter Byrne

I have also been going through a pile of newspaper articles. I have added results from newspaper articles (as well as the newspaper articles)for various years but a comprehensive set for 1880 but there are a few issues with different pages picking them up because the systems seem to have a problem with anything before 1990!! I am working on fixing this.

Newspaper update

I have been working on the Newspaper data. I have fixed a few issues with the Newspaper data so that it now includes individual links to any events referred to in the article. I still have to go through and add non racing events.

I have been searching for relevant newspaper entries and have completed up to the end of 1880, for Hastings. I intend to continue extracting data from 1880

Fellowship of 1066 Longmarkers

There were two small binders in the current box of material I have been processing which had over 130 documents related to the "Fellowship of 1066 Longmarkers". This is another group closely associated with the Club and part of its history.

The "Fellowship" page is accessible here but it is a work in progress and is not available on the Mobile Site because it sits outside the main archive.

I have summarised the notes from the inaugural meeting below.


"On the 3 September 1984, at the invitation of Arthur Coleman, a group of long standing members of the Hastings and St Leonards CC (listed below) met at Arthur's home to discuss the formation of an association of old members of the club, based loosely on that of the Catford Cycling Club's Fellowship of Old Kittens.

The aim of the Fellowship was to carry on the old traditions of the Club, primarily the Club Dinner (to be held on the last Saturday in January), as well as preserving the records of the club.

Membership was by invitation only, for life, and full membership would be restricted to former or current members of the club who had been in the club at least fifteen years earlier (1969).

Associate membership would be granted to members of other cycling clubs or associations.

Archive Update

Over the last few weeks I have been scanning and processing a folder of timing sheets. I have uploaded around 80 documents and almost 700 results covering 1977 to 1979.

I have to process more of the documents I have uploaded, and I will need to audit the upload. I have also managed to clear out quite a lot of duplicates.

Fellowship of Kent and Sussex Cyclists

A new website has been put together by Andy Avis about the Fellowship of Kent and Sussex Cyclists.

During the second world war years of 1939-1945 a group of future Fellows by reason of their age or reserved occupation were inspired to keep their pastime of cycling alive during those difficult years for the benefit of fellow cyclists who were on leave from the services and to ensure that normal cycling club life would continue when hostilities finally ceased.

Following a range of informal gatherings of cyclists in 'The Gun” (The Gun and Spit Roast) Public House on the Heath in Horsmonden, F. L. (Freddie) March with the aid of Ted Harrison organized a meeting for the 2nd January 1944 to enlist the attendees to establishing the Fellowship of Kent and Sussex Cyclists.
