Four Trials M Carpenter [Maurice Carpenter] on Sunday became the first member of the Hastings and St Leonards Cycling and Athletic club since 1931 to compete in the North Road CC. Memorial 50 mile trial, which has now became an invitation event for fast tricyclists, and he was placed sixth with a time of 2hr 22min 33sec. The winner was G Clayton, Spartan Wheelers, who did 2hr 15min 19sec. Once an invitation event to the best 12 riders in the country, the trial was won by G W Jenkins [George Jenkins] of the Hastings Club in 1929 and 1930. Other trials supported by members on Sunday were the Appollo CC women’s 25 miles and KCA ”100” [Kent CA]. There was a club run to Yalding and tea was at Beckley. The club’s second evening trial over 25 miles was held in conjunction with the Rye club [Rye Wheelers] last week and best times were made by J Southerden [Jack Southerden] 1:10:23; B Dean [Bernard Deane (Rye Wheelers)], who did 1:11:55 with a puncture delay; and J Holland [Jim Hollands], 1:11:56. Mixed Grill Hastings and St Leonards Cycling and Athletic Club activities over the holiday weekend included touring, the Sunday run, and racing on road and track. M Carpenter [Maurice Carpenter] did a very good ride in the Tricycle Association national 50 mile trial to take third place, with a time of 2hr 18min 26 sec. A week earlier he did an exceptionally fast time of 2hrs 15mins 26sec in the Dartmoor RC Open ”50”, held on a Devon course to win the handicap and improve his club tricycle record by more than four minutes. The cub was also represented in the Dragon RC women’s 100 miles trial, held on the Bath Road; the Medway Wheelers’ 50 miles rial; and events at the Rye Sports on Monday. Members on the Sunday run to West Sussex covered more than 100 miles having lunch at Shermansbury and tea at Buxted. A club ”25” last week was won by B Dean [B Deane (Rye Wheelers)] of the Rye Club, in 1hr 7min 36sec. J Hollands [Jum Hollands] was next in 1hr 9min 38sec: and A Huggett was third in 1hr 10min 55sec. TEAM SUCCESS In the East Sussex Cycling Association 50mile trial on Sunday, Hastings and St Leonards Cycling and Athletic Club enjoyed Its first team success since the 1955 season. Only three members rode, but each did his best time of the year at the distance, and their aggregate time was about 3½ minutes better than that of the Southborough club's team, who were next among the nine competing clubs. A Moorhouse [Tony Moorhouse] was fourth fastest in 2hr 12min 36sec; M. Carpenter [Maurice Carpenter] did 2hr 13min 22sec; and J. Southerden [Jack Southerden] 2hr. 16min 58sec. The winner was K Griffiths, the Uckfield Club’s fast veteran, who did 2hr 9min 11sec. In the women's section E. Rolleston [Esther Rolleston] did 2hr 35mln. 10sec. The Sunday run went out Chalvlngton for lunch, and tea was Hawkhurst. Some fast times have been returned in the club's recent 10-mile trials, and last week's event two were inside 25 minutes, with A. Moorhouse first in 24min 50sec; and M Carpenter second In 24min 59sec. Tomorrow's run will leave from the King’s Head, Ore at 6 am. Tea will be at Beckley.
