… The next race was the race of the day, and consisted of a three miles bicycle handicap, run in two heats. Considerable excitement was manifest in both races. The racing was exceedingly good. THREE MILES LOCAL HANDICAP BICYCLE RACE. First prize to the value of £5; second. £3; third £2. First Heat F W Beck, 175 yards start 1 W Davis, 200 ditto 2 A L Lovett, 180 ditto This was a closely-contested race, some splendid form being shown by several of the riders. F W Beck passed into first place, beating H Davis, who was second. A L Lovett, who was third, rode in capital style. E C Gilbert, scratch, also showed some fine form, but the task imposed upon him was too much, he failing to take a place. Second Heat. C Shortell, 300 yrads start 1 A W Chesterfield 100 ditto 2 F Amon 250 ditto 3 Only three of eight competitors turned up in this race. A good start was effected. Chesterfield soon passed Amon and rapidly gained on Shortell, but the distance was too short to overhaul him. Chesterfield, therefore, took second place. Final Heat, F W Beck, 175 yards start (£5) 1 C Shortell, 300 ditto (£3) 2 A T Lovett, 100 ditto (£2) 3 H Davis, 200 ditto F Amon, 250 ditto A Chesterfield, 100 ditto A very good start was made, all the competitors getting of well together. F Beck passed Shortell, Davis, and Amon, and took first place. Lovett, who rode exceedingly well, succeeded in getting into third place. Shortell kept his in the second position throughout the race. Chesterfield also rode well. The race occupied 10min 23sec.
