Four Trials M Carpenter [Maurice Carpenter] on Sunday became the first member of the Hastings and St Leonards Cycling and Athletic club since 1931 to compete in the North Road CC. Memorial 50 mile trial, which has now became an invitation event for fast tricyclists, and he was placed sixth with a time of 2hr 22min 33sec. The winner was G Clayton, Spartan Wheelers, who did 2hr 15min 19sec. Once an invitation event to the best 12 riders in the country, the trial was won by G W Jenkins [George Jenkins] of the Hastings Club in 1929 and 1930. Other trials supported by members on Sunday were the Appollo CC women’s 25 miles and KCA ”100” [Kent CA]. There was a club run to Yalding and tea was at Beckley. The club’s second evening trial over 25 miles was held in conjunction with the Rye club [Rye Wheelers] last week and best times were made by J Southerden [Jack Southerden] 1:10:23; B Dean [Bernard Deane (Rye Wheelers)], who did 1:11:55 with a puncture delay; and J Holland [Jim Hollands], 1:11:56.
